I was bit by Comcast with the data caps. Once my contract expired my bill jumped up to $250/month. I called retention and they wouldn't make a deal so I terminated my video service and went OTA and streaming. I didn't lose a show. I was still seeing bills over $150. I called again. Still no deal. I thought I ended up at $99/month with no caps until I started seeing around a $50 charge on my credit card for mobile service. This was not the deal I agreed so I canceled everything after more than 20 years with them. I am now paying $40/month with T-Mobile for faster service and no data caps. The service is great even in my rural area. Also T-Mobile has humans to talk to you. I have over 3 decades experience in the industry and this is the worst I've ever seen Comcast. The FCC needs to force Comcast to implement roll over data or at least account for the number of days in each month when calculating data caps. I've used up both of my curtesy overages on the last day of months with 31 days. 90% of months I'm only using 800GB or less of data but sometimes I need to use more. Windows has a couple of network settings that help with data caps. Mark your internet as a 'metered' connection. Data usage can be seen in Advanced network settings under Network & internet. You can set a data cap and Windows will warn you when you approach the limit. This doesn't account data usage on your other devices. Some, maybe most(?) routers have Traffic Analyzers that will show you data usage and by which device and site or application.

Another fun fact, you don't need to lease the ISP's equipment to implement the data plan.

What pisses me off about American internet providers is the unbalanced nature of the service, with download speeds usually enormously different to the upload speeds. In Europe, the plans offered (which are a fraction of the price of U.S.) are symetrical, with upload and download speeds the same. The American model presupposes that you are a "consumer" of the internet, rather than a participant in it. In the U.S., I pay Comcast $126 a month for internet-only service with 1.2G dowload and 35 mbps up, although I RARELY get anywhere near those speeds. In Spain, we pay less than 80 euros (about $87) for fibre optic 2Gig internet, two mobile phone lines, and 40+ channels of TV, equipment all included.

There's only one choice where I live and thats comcast. Verizon is coming in in the next year or so in the rural community where I live. I'm all for free market and competition but if there's only one then there is no competition. They don't offer military, senior or disability discounts and find that disappointing. My next best option and hope others follow as well, file a complaint with FCC. Doing nothing means you're ok with it.

It's $50/mo now (before taxes)? I thought it was $45/mo (before taxes) to carry the extra ABC channel in the handful of big markets. Many Sling markets have either NBC or Fox for free. A few have both for free.

Limiting bandwidth is effectively a data cap, since you can only transfer X amount of data per month. This is just another greed fee.

The electric power companies were termed “extortionists” by Franklin D. Roosevelt for their gouging of rate payers. In the New Deal era non profit electric cooperatives were established to provide their own electric service. Public utility districts were also established in many states. If internet rates become unaffordable people will form non-profits and establish their own fiber and satellite cable connections.

Dont use cameras that are constantly streaming to the cloud. I have 16 at my home and that is 300mbit/s of video. Yea I have plenty of bandwidth from ziply but I still require control over my own data.

No some of us have truly unlimited and already pay for that but thanks for warning others. Damn when you said 25$ I thought I am not paying that much but I am getting a 15$ discount on that right now. Also you need a minimum of 800 Mbps plan or higher for free equipment rental.

Just more justification to have a NAS with Plex or Jellyfin or what-have-you and to sail the seas for your shows instead of streaming over the internet. Yes there are extra things to consider and the initial cost is steep, but in the long run you save a lot of money and aggravation.

Right now I have a two-year deal with Xfinity for $35 that includes 300 Mbps (formerly 200 Mbps). It includes the modem so I get unlimited DLs which I need as I stream -- everything -- and at 4K when I can. I use between 1 and 1.3+ Tb/month and my plan allows up to 1.2 Tb so some months I do go over. The plan I have was a 2-year promotional and expires next March so, unless I can something decent from Xfinity, I will probably switch to fiber -- especially since they put an access panel on my front lawn. Or I might switch to Xfinity's Now Internet which a prepaid service that include modem and no data cap for $30 for 100 Mbps dl or $45 for 200 Mbps. As far as computers, I have a Beelink mini-computer hooked up to the HDMI-in port on my Fire Cube 3rd Gen for when I need to web browse. The computer has 4k output and was relatively inexpensive. I know the Fire TV has a browser but it is kind of clunky to navigate.

A few years ago I bought a new Motorola modem and paid the extra fee for unlimited data. Then back in Jan of this year I upgraded my speed from 100 Mbps up to 800 Mbps and then because my 2 year old modem wasn't compatible with the unlimited data I had to switch over to their modem. I currently pay $113 a month. I did search around for a different option, but unfortunately in my area we're stuck with Comcast! I would love to switch to fiber since the upload is the same speed as downloads, but it hasn't expanded to my area. I'll keep looking and may have to inquire about when I may expect fiber in my neighborhood.

I dropped Xfinity for Frontier after the price went over $80 for slower Internet. Frontier is way faster and cheaper but the website and customer service is terrible. Trade offs I guess.
