Established in 1855 and located in Indianapolis, Indiana, Butler University is a private institution named in honor of its founder, Ovid Butler. The university offers a diverse range of academic programs, encompassing over 60 major fields of study across six colleges.
In 1850, the Indiana General Assembly approved Ovid Butler's plan to establish a Christian university in Indianapolis. After five years of development, the institution opened its doors on November 1, 1855, as North-Western Christian University, with its campus located at 13th Street and College Avenue in Indianapolis. Ovid Butler, the university's founder, provided the property. While founded by members of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), the university maintained its independence and non-sectarian character. Notably, it was one of the early institutions in Indiana and the United States to admit both men and women. In 1875, the university relocated to Irvington, on the east side of Indianapolis, and changed its name to Butler University in 1877.
