One of the things that I thought was so profound from these chapters is how the Lord reacts to Elijah expressing a desire to die. First, He ensures that Elijah gets some sleep, then He makes sure he eats. As someone who has struggled with depression and anxiety both for most of my life, I've learned that those two things make a big difference! God then ensures that Elijah is fed spiritually, not just physically, by sending him to the mount of God (Horeb). He reminds Elijah that He is found most often in the small details of our lives, in the little things. He gives him a purpose (which is invaluable during bouts of depression) then, finally, He shows Elijah that he isn't truly alone - there are other believers and now he has a friend in Elisha. It's incredible to me that in one single chapter, written who knows how many thousands of years ago, we can have some of the most profound, yet simple advice on how to deal with our dark times. I love how the Lord works. 😊

The widow in Zarephath’s story is much like my story. My husband and I were led by God to move from Idaho to South Carolina. We were obedient and made many sacrifices to do that. We struggled financially a lot. In a desire to improve our finances we sat down with our branch president and asked him for advice. He counseled us to buy a home. It made no sense to me but we “went and did”. We were told by God to buy a particular home-one that was way too far out of our budget. The numbers didn’t add up and we found ourselves signing that we would pay a $6,000 closing fee-money that was nowhere to be found. And somehow the Lord poured out the blessings of heaven. We have been so abundantly blessed. I’m still not sure how it happened. We paid off $30,000 in credit card debt and had thousands in savings in @3 years. I stand all amazed.

While listening during the Doctrine & Covenants, I thought you 2 were crazy for saying that you love the Old Testament Then My sister bought me your daily devotional book. The introduction states the Old Testament is the best place to see Jesus Christ in his role as deliverer. I decided to trust, study & listen to your program weekly. I am now amazed at how wonderful this book is and because of your insights. I now also. say “I love the Old Testament.” I look forward to new lessons weekly and reading the Old Testament. Thank you.

I just thought of this as I was listening to the story of Elijah and the widow - I started wondering how the widow had been prepared for this event (of course she was prepared, right?) I wonder if throughout the famine, she had already begun to share. Had others come to her door, asking for a little something? This is the kind of preparation I imagine. She had already proven her heart before the prophet showed up.

I haven't heard anyone mention this, but it occurred to me that since there is a drought, isn't just asking the widow for a drink of water a sacrifice? Also with it being a drought, 4 buckets of water would also be a sacrifice, which would be sanctified as part of Elijah's sacrifice to the Lord.

Fab as always. Just thinking about "the Angel of the Lord". Exodus 3:2-4. It's the Angel of the Lord who appears in the burning bush. He himself declares "I AM". The angel I believe is the Lord here. How wonderful how the Lord just says to Elijah - "the journey is too great for thee". He will thus say to us as well.

Wow first interesting point that came to mind with Solomon having his heart divided was a reminder of the baby story where his judgment was to cut the baby in half to prove who the real mother was. It really makes the writing seem more intentional and connected than I realized.

Most likely the number of righteous kings in each kingdom. Sadly, not one of the kings of Israel (Northern kingdom) from Jeroboam on down did right in the eyes of the Lord. Judah fared better, but not by much.

God seems to work with people in the circumstances they live in. Maybe for us its more the power line not busting instead of fire from heaven. On my mission though, I saw great miracles like these- clouds appearing right after I prayed for them, a forgeign woman able to speak another language after a week of reading the BOM, one man overcoming pornography just from listening to mormon messages on his own. God works in powerful ways and in simple ways, but it's all beautiful.
