In 1967, at the age of 17, Alf Ingesson Thoor began flight training in the Swedish Air Force. After making the cut he became one of a select group of young pilots who would push the fighter jets A32 Lansen and AJ37 Viggen, and themselves, to the limit. Fast, low and often in large formations they flew attack missions over land and the Baltic sea, in exercises where minor mishaps could have deadly consequences.
The Swedish military wanted its air power up to strength. They succeeded − but it came at a cost.
