Come on in My Kitchen - written by Robert Johnson, played on the Mule resonator.
.
Robert Leroy Johnson (May 8, 1911 - August 16, 1938) was an incredible Delta Blues Guitarist/Singer/Performer who played mostly on street corners, in juke joints and Barrelhouses.
.
During his actual lifetime he didn’t achieve significant commercial success, but did record a numbers of tracks in two separate sessions. One in San Antonio in 1936, and one in Dallas in 1937. In total he recorded 29 distinct songs with 13 surviving alternate takes working with legendary Country Music Hall of Fame producer Don Law.
.
Not much is truly known about his life or death, but there are plenty of theories and stories. He in most probability died from having congenital syphilis, but legend goes his was poisoned by the husband of a woman Robert was flirting with in a bar post performance. Legend is more entertaining!
.
Robert, IMHO, is the first Delta guitarist who had clearly studied the music of Charlie Patton, Son House, Lonnie Johnson and many others to come-up with his own style and songs. Across the tracks recorded you can hear a real cross section of different blues styles and influences. Clearly someone that had worked hard and put in some significant hours of practice. However, again legend goes that Robert ‘sold his soul’ to the Devil in exchange for musical prowess. Again, legend is more entertaining!
.
From an influence point of view, and this is super subjective, he’s potentially the most influential of the Delta players. Countless heavyweight musicians, across numerous genres site him as a major influence. Eric Clapton, as part of Cream immortalized the tune ‘Crossroads’ in their amazing version recorded at their fair-well concert that Eric actually thinks is awful!
