Zarna Garg, 48, has had a meteoric rise as a stand-up comedian. Five years ago, she went from stay-at-home-mom to instant crowd-puller at New York comedy clubs. She has since won a stand-up TV show by Kevin Hart, been interviewed by Hillary Clinton and toured with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. She now has a comedy special out worldwide on Amazon Prime, called One In A Billion. A big part of her appeal is her honest appraisal of her two cultures, as a woman, wife and mother who was raised in Mumbai and has spent most of her life in the US. With her warm persona and all-embracing smile, she talks about infidelity, white parenting, the archetypal Indian mother-in-law as the world’s greatest super-villain; and how brown women don’t get to laugh enough. She laughs at herself too: a date once told her she reminded him of an Ewok, she says; and thinking that was the princess from Star Wars (rather than the furry biped from Star Wars), she thinks perhaps she may not have reacted appropriately. “I don’t think I’m funny. I’m honest,” she says laughing. Watch samples of her comedy here.
