As soon as I saw that Zasu would be in the movie, I knew I'd enjoy it. She was so much fun and such a professional.

A very enjoyable film, with so many wonderful vintage character actors. I love these old dark house mysteries, particularly from the 1930s.

A real (reel) pro, Zasu Pitts appeared in over 500 movies from the silent era to the 60's. Even when she was dying of cancer she appeared on camera. An actor's actor. The great director Erich von Stroheim called her the greatest tragedian of films even though her forte was comedy roles.

That one lady sounds like the voice of Olive Oyle in the old Popeye cartoons. Then the whacky copy at the end, "I ain't afraid a no ghost!" Hmm, where did I hear THAT? Fun film.

As a matter of fact, the Fleischer Bros., who produced the first Pop Eye cartoons, back in the '30s had Mae Questel base the voice of Olive Oyle on the voice of Zasu Pitts.

They made some other films together...there was a series of comedy-mystery films where she played a teacher called Hildegarde Withers and James Gleason was her boyfriend, a cop. I don't remember the titles but you could find them on imdb. In the first couple of films in the series the role was played by dame May Whitty.

In the very beginning of this movie the time was 5: 23 min, well when that character came in wearing the glasses he scared Nora Rafferty and then as she was shivering in the chair where he said the man was murdered. Well the character Norva Rafferty is 8 perfect Image of Olive Oil from Popeye. Why, yes that cartoon was created in the 1940s maybe even the 1930s.

This could be a really good movie, but it needs to be heavily edited. During this period, movie makers often mixed comedy with mystery/horror/thriller type movies. I believe this was to add levity to a very trying time (the stock market shenanigans of their day.) Thus the performance by Zasu Pitts was meant to be amusing, but in today's world, it's just disruptive and annoying; all that moaning and ear-piercing shrieking and screaming; horrible. As much as possible should be edited out and you would have a really solid story and film. I'm sure there are the purists who wouldn't touch it, but I don't care for mystery being derailed by comedic attempts that hit or miss. ***
