Hunting buffalo out of a herd means you have to come close to them. On Wintershoek Safaris Nyara property, hunter Danie with fellow hunter Johan, encounters the first herd of buffalo early in the morning, and they stalk for several miles through the dense bush with PH Johan. An opportunity arises to take down a wounded springbuck before lunch, and late in the afternoon a tense stalk for several hundred meters, right between a spread out herd of buffalo grazing in the afternoon sun bring them in close range. Selecting the right cow becomes difficult when their heads are down grazing, and there are a lot of eyes from all around that may possibly spot you. Even after placing an excellent shot, the danger is not over with the whole heard turning around after running a short distance. With the cow partly covered by bush on her final resting place, an insurance shot is the best advice... to make sure she is dead, and to scare off the rest of the herd that is still close-by.
