This was the last session of the weekend. Most people had gone home. This was my first time to the track since installing my new shocks, springs, and swaybars, and I had already shaved about three seconds off my personal best lap time at this track (1:36.5, in the previous session).
Conan, who has nearly 20 years of track experience, including actual wheel to wheel racing in spec 944, caught and passed Eric, and then me. I decided to see if I could match his line, hoping to shave a few more tenths. This led to a few instances of tail-out slides, and a new top speed down the front straight, peaking at 129mph according to telemetry.
It all went by very quickly, and I am still digesting what happened, but as I braked for T1, the car came around hard and I found myself sliding towards the gravel trap. I steered to ease the entry and rolled in backwards to an easy stop.
Amidst all that, I forgot to push in the clutch, so the engine stalled. It took a couple tries to get it to fire up again, but when it did, it was surprisingly louder than before, like I was running open headers! I gave it a little rev for giggles, then checked to see if I could drive out of the gravel. No such luck!
I climbed out of the car and found that the rear end was sunk down several inches. At the end of the video, you can hear me announce to the corner worker, “I am STUCK!”
Turns out the exhaust pipe cracked all the way around, right at the flange before the converter where it mates up to the manifold.

This is my second time HPDEing at Grattan. My first was in 2016. I've autocrossed here a handful of times before that, and HPDE'd once at Gingerman in 2015. I wish the budget would support more than once a year! This car has been my nine-month daily driver (it gets stored during the winter) since 2005. I've slowly been modifying it to be more competent and consistent on track. This is my first day on track with my new shocks, springs, and swaybar, and the car behaves quite differently. I think the rear bar is too stiff -- it oversteers a bit more readily than I'd like.
