It's Sunday morning, 8:24 am, me sitting on my desk working on my hubby's portrait filling out the hair portion, something I've never done in my life before and listening to your advise, while he's snoring happily downstairs! "very ordinary, having a face for radio, middle aged, a bit chubby"..... oh....how I can relate to that! You simply made my day (aside from the proudness which is swelling up inside me already about the little piece of work in front of me which actually, truly resembles my better half!)!!! Thank you for that...I'm so glad that I 'found' you! Have a nice w/end!

Thank you so very much for this wonderful video. I'm 67 years old, and have never been able to do my art, because of personal reasons until now. I had a son who was born with kidney problems. He was in and out of hospitals all of his life. I donated my kidney to him when he was 2 years old in 1986. Since that time he has had cancer and other medical problems. He passed away in 2011 at the age of 28. I was suicidal, and have not been able to create art until now. Bonny, your videos have been so helpful. Especially this one. You have given me hope and a belief in myself again. Thank you so very, very much for all you do. God bless. Ace Robst Jr.

Thank you for this video. It's really encouraging for me. I'm 32 and hadn't created any art between the ages of 16 and 30. I had been dissuaded from pursuing art by my mum (who was an artist herself, specifically a jeweller and sculptor), who basically said there was no real way to make a living in it. So I ended up going to college studying things I wasn't passionate about, I flunked out out of 2 universities and basically went from being a happy and confident A-grade student to feeling like a directionless failure. I spent my late teens and all of my 20s moving from entry level job to entry level job, completely clueless about what to do with my life and feeling hopeless. It wasn't until I picked up the art supplies again at 30 that I realised what I had been missing. At the moment I'm still honing my skills and working full time as a dog groomer before I take the leap into being an independent artist. To be honest I've been scared to do it because I just don't earn enough to save any money as a safety net. Hearing your story and tips about building a business is so valuable. Thanks again.

I feel at the moment I am looking at everest wondering how I will get to the top but I've took my first step.... so I guess it's just a case of one foot in front of the other now. Just discovered you Bonnie and so enjoying all your talent, information etc...I'm 72...I studied art, tried to sell in galleries etc etc but it never really took off until...Pet Portraits...this past year. It was really by accident but has been picking up. I usually paint in oils but want to try my hand at pastels...I'm assuming that the pencils and pastel pencils are similar. As I decided to learn Mandolin at 53, I know, it's never to late to learn.!

Thank you so much! I discovered you through the colored pencil animal portrait group. I took my first art class with my teenage daughter two years ago. We started with a year of graphite lessons and then spent last year exploring different pencils (graphite, charcoal, colored, pastel, and watercolor pencils plus pen and ink). This year we are exploring watercolor painting. I love seeing the art of other people and have particularly enjoyed seeing the animal portraits. One of my projects last year was a portrait of my dog, though I tend to have a light hand and the finished portrait isn't vibrant enough. Perhaps I need to buy better pencils or different paper or just add more layers. I really appreciated this video. I would love to be able to do commission work in the future. Thanks!

Great information Bonnie! I've just stopped doing commissions for personal reasons, but I agree with everything you said. I was doing both pastel and oil portraits, and gradually increased my prices. Last year, wanting to slow things down, I drastically increased my oil painting prices thinking nobody would pay those prices. Guess what happened? Everybody wanted the expensive oil painting! I also had a Patreon channel but I'd bitten off more than I could chew. I was offering four full videos which was too much, especially with the oil tutorials. I'm reconsidering opening one again but perhaps with just one or two lessons. I don't want to overwhelm myself again.

Widowed in 2020 I'm now in my late sixties and have been drawing with intention and enjoyment for the past year. I've completed quite a few commissions using pastel pencils but am keen to change to colored pencils. I do have an Instagram page which is linked to my Facebook page but I kind of keep doubting myself and my ability, You are so right in saying that we don't know what each day will bring. I dream of what you have achieved. You are so dedicated and focused you have a real head for buisness and of course very talented artist. I'm very much at amateur hobby level, aged 50 and been creative for the last few years, dabbling here and there, mostly in watercolour and more recently pencils and I follow lots of tutorials. However I jump about, I need to focus. I can do it I think but no confidence to do it on my own. I love colouring books as well hence finding pencils. I'm curious do you still colour in those these days? When I was 15, all I wanted to do was go to Art School, I had it all planned but sadly life got in the way, parents spilt up and I moved country. I never got to go to Art School and it's my biggest regret now that I never followed that dream. I see artists like you and it gives me a very small glimmer of hope that only day I can realise my dream.

I am still binge watching and I started earlier today to cram it all in. I do wish I’d found you years ago. I feel at 50, I need to get a move on. My question to you about getting started is this: Did you have to have lots of pictures drawn before you really went for it, if that makes sense. What I mean is, I am quite slow at drawing because I am still learning (only realised I could draw in October last year) and I wonder if I need to just do as many as I can before I try and be seen. My IG is very sparse because I don’t have the content to keep posting and it takes me ages to draw something. I work full time anyway so it’s not for my main income but I would like to get more work so I can feel fulfilled and like I’ve achieved something special for me. What advice do you have? (PS, this video is fab!).

The first thing I want to say is it's never too late and you don't need to feel like you have to rush. I have members in Ignite who are now in there 70s and 80s starting their own art businesses! It's amazing, so don't worry about that. No, just go for it. Start sharing and being authentically you. You don't have to just share finished pieces, you can share short videos of you drawing, works in progress, even behind the scenes things. My main pieces of advice is just keep posting as regularly as you can and just be yourself 🥰

I did teach decorative painting for 8 years which was really lovely and most enjoyable we have 7 gorgeous horses and ponies im hoping to paint and I really feel drawn to coloured pencils so hope fully will do that also! Hopefully one-day I'm able to join your patreon I'm sure it's be a wonderful experience and I also love the thought of always supporting fellow artists in some way! I feel that alot of artists seem to be that way just so full of encouragement! Thanks again I truly love your videos❤🎨🐎

I started back to my drawing for the first time since I left school in 1959, last year aged 75. I’ve spent the year drawing friends dogs, cats, donkeys. I’ve done over 150 and wish I’d stuck at it then.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this topic. I do have on off topic question, however: what type of paper is that you are drawing on in this video? Thanks again for all your brillant videos!

I have been doing pet portraits for a long time but always had a part time retail job as well until last summer when I'd literally just had enough and handed my notice in...so I am now in my 9th month of being full time artist and was doing ok but things have started getting very quiet now. I have been trying to increase my social media followings but I never seem to have much success on social media. My plan is to start doing some tutorials but not sure if I'll get anyone to actually watch them.

I loved you talk on marketing how to market your art, found it very helpful. I stumble over getting my work out in the public eye, I have done the shows and gallery’s and even getting 1st, and people’s choice awards it never bought me sales. Word of mouth and friends is about the only thing that worked, not enough to keep me going. My hubby bide when I was 50, leaving me with two kids (teenagers) and a broken heart. I’m hoping now at 68 I can create a market online, it’s something I can see being able to do from home. Thank you for your insights. Also loved watching you develop the horse, I’ve not worked in pencil before, I specialised in pastel portraits, some oils, acrylics and pen but never thought of trying pencils, love learning something new ❤️💐

I’m so glad it was useful - that’s most have been so tough for you all - there are lots of things you can do to market your work that doesn’t feel like your selling 🥰🥰

Bonnie, Thank you for the chat. I have joined on your Patreon and am learning a lot. I am also older that has found my art again. Your description of how you have got there was most helpful as I started posting my drawings and then people started to ask for drawings.

Hello Bonnie, I have just joined you on patreon recently and hope to get to one of your workshops in the US this year. My story is quite similar as well...I drew nonstop as a child all the way through high school and then did not pick it back up until just about a year ago. I have been doing CP since October of last year and love it! What pencil extender are you using? The only one that I have found that works for my polychromos are the 2 pack from Derwent and then only one of those works and the other is to small so I have having to buy those packs...and nothing seems to hold the derwent lightfast 🤷🏼♀️ Stay safe and well! Amiee

thank you for telling your story. my art career follows very much the same path, even right up to the year i picked it up again in 2016. i took art in college in the 70s, got into graphic design for 30 years, and then finally tried drawing again. and i still had the touch, though i had never worked in pastels, which i love. i need to watch this and also try pencil on pastelmat. your work is a beautiful example for us all. and, by the way, i am 73, live in central minnesota and most of my commissions are horses, with dogs running a close second.

Bonny, Thank you so much for this video. You have replied to my comments on instagram and been a wonderful encouragement. I am starting at 55 and my husband left me 15 years ago with five children. They are all now grown and in college and I have time to do the artwork I love. You are my inspiration and your videos are helping me get through this lockdown. I'm still learning to be consistent and learning my style. Thank you so much. God bless you from the USA.

Bonny you are amazing. I took part in your free workshop last week and you really inspired me. I'd never drawn/coloured an animal before, and I've since started to do so with the animals in my family. Your generosity sharing your skill is so heart-warming. Thank you so much for everything you're doing.
