as someone who is in the adopts community (and I wade in the shallow waters of the furry one at times, though rarely), I actually appreciate this type of video that outlines just how awful the negatives can be in the commissions part of things. I personally paid a few hundred dollars (years ago mind you) for a custom closed species design on a PREMADE base and got guilt tripped into accepting a design that only had less than half of my requested details (and this custom was very personal), more or less, because the artist felt threatened when I briefly mentioned the 6 month paypal window (as like a 'hey as the commissioner I feel nervous about this but I am trusting you anyways because youre my friend'). they were a popular artist so I felt unsafe to even say anything publicly, and that's how it is for a LOT of commissioners.

That sounds dreadful, although I wouldn't ever buy a character on those terms for that amount of money. I don't know what I'd do If that happened to me. I hope you got some kind of compensation from that.

@@pompe11badboy Not from the artist but I basically had to resell the character. I at least got all I paid back but the experience was so souring that it ruined our friendship and I removed my MYOs from their species (with permission, because I wanted to still respect them and their work). I'm still in some CS because I love my babes but generally speaking, I won't join new ones anymore. They're SO MUCH drama. The person I idolized as a kid because I loved their neopets characters created Wyngro - talk about an absolute disaster of a species.

Damn, that's rough... I've started taking commissions not that long ago and still feel very unprepared for many things, but so far all my clients were an absolute gold and diamonds. I never commissioned anyone myself, but I never imagined that such outrageous cases are so often? that's awful and now i feel like i've been feeling in a bubble made of rainbows and cutesy(okay not without kinks but that's pretty normal lol)

It really sucks, I feel like I've got the worst luck when it comes to this. Last week I started commissioning people again and already I'm being ghosted by 2 of them. Thankfully it's not for irl cash but still. I'm glad all your clients have been amazing, I wish you the best with Your commissions!

@@pompe11badboy jeez... Yeah that's really unlucky... Maybe consider trying places like ych commishes, fiver, Etsy that are designated for commissioning? If artists there ghost you then they'll get in trouble. Or maybe look for artists that use artistree, I heard that this platform doesn't *truly* take money from you(it just freezes) until completion?

11:13 as someone who has lots of ocs and is planning on possibly selling designs I just wouldn't sell something I'm so attached to, I think some people who act like this might not necessarily do that with the active intent of scamming but doing it is still wrong and unprofessional(and of course regardless of feelings, the act itself is still a scam) , people who do this need to remember there is a distinct line between your ocs and products you sell and if you plan on selling a product you can't act as if you still own it 100%

I do everything in my power to never be a horror story to anyone. If any commissioner sees a mistake in my art i ask them to tell me. Or yell at me. Either works.

11:03 I can understand the one talking about trans character and disabled character design parts, because hey, you most likely bought them because they were trans/disabled But the top three are just... peculiar..? "Don't completely redesign without my permission" dude I threw money at your face for this guy, why are you acting like it's still in your hands lol Besides, prolly still gonna keep the original look, as that's what I got them for For my side when it comes to all this and that, as soon as it's outta my hands, the owner can do whatever they want (I just hope it wouldn't be for hate and other yuck stuff) None of my adopts have genders personally, because that feels like an "Up to owner" type deal to me, like personalities and stories and stuff Let the ppl have fun! And keep one another sane with our creations🎉

I'm 3 months late, but whatever lol I don't really think changing a character to having trans scars or not should be put behind a lock. Considering these characters are almost always made just to sell, many of them don't even have genders/preferences assigned to them yet. Since trans scars are often very personal and associated with identity and gender, Forcing an identity-driven trait on a character that essentially has NO identity yet kind of seems a bit restricting. That's the same reason why I think everyone should be allowed to add trans scars onto their ocs even if the original design didn't have them, or change a character's gender so it can relate to themselves as a person more, regardless of what the adopt was originally "assigned". Just mentioning that because shockingly enough I see that type of rule A LOT And playing devils advocate,, I assume the reason artists say you can't completely redesign without permission is that some higher-end artists get their income by selling customs, so if their potential clients are looking through designs/customs marked under that artist and see some low-quality neon green wolf hybrid, then they might not take the time to check and see that it was actually just redesigned, y'know? Even then I think that just comes down to the redesigner making it clear that there's a difference between the one they paid for and the version that was redesigned. I can't really think of anything else though, the art space is just wack to navigate
