Good video, I got all the information I need! But soldering these DIN connectors is so much pain in the behind, I will not make a universal cable, only a composite-only now and a separate s-video cable later, I never need both at once and the less wires the better. I made a power cable and a serial cable recently, I filled the connector with hot melt glue before snapping on the black sleeve. It is not easily repairable, but it may last longer.

Should we pro-actively ground the DIN-8 outer ring/body?

Don't think so, I'm not even sure if it's connected to ground on the C64 side and even if it was it wouldn't make any difference

@@Sawickipedia Well, I got my cable built, and it works well. It's a shame the cable I bought from Jaycar was just way too big, it made it a struggle. The fact that the video cable was 80% plastic insulation around a wire the same size as the audio pair was a real surprise. Ooh, let's use 3 identical wires, but make the video cable insulation 3 times thicker! Yeah, that's a cool idea. Not. What were they thinking? (The manufacturers, not Jaycar)

Nice. Yeah I doubt Jaycar is cutting open the cables to see what they're being sold by their supplier, but maybe they should. Anyway, it's been a while since I put out this video so honestly can't remember if I still build these the same way I did here. Maybe I'll revisit this on TheRetroChannel at some point

im getting frustrated because I bought one of these online and the s-video didn't work, only the composite - I went inside the cable and it looked like they accidentally swapped the connections of the Luma and Chroma pins. I fixed it and confirmed everything was connected properly with my multimeter, but still only the composite works. I don't understand what's wrong :( could it be something else internal to the c64?

It's possible there is an issue inside the C64 but as composite is working it seems unlikely. The composite signal is generated by mixing the luma and chroma inside the RF modulator, so it must be making it that far. After that the luma and chroma comes out of the RF modulator and goes straight to the DIN connector. Unless someone has done some kind of modification to the DIN connector - this happened to me on the most recent C64 I was working on, there's a video on my other channel TheRetroChannel if you're interested. It seems unlikely it's a issue with the C64, I would triple check that cable

Will this work for Atari 800 or do you have a video for that? I have an old Atari 800 I want to get video AND sound to my TV. Saw your Bosch Dishwasher video on how to repair. Fantastic! Thanks!

Thanks Andrew. I don't have an Atari 800 (yet) but I did a bit of research. The answer is yes and no. The 800 is only a 5 pin din (no centre pin just pins arranged in a semi circle) should be easy to find otherwise use the soldering iron trick to push out the extra pins. For just composite video and audio the pins are the same so you only need to connect the audio out, composite video and ground. For S-Video things are a bit more complicated. Pin 5 (audio in on the c64) is actually the the S-Video chroma on the 800, not sure if the resistor is required. Finally depending on which version 800 you have you may not be able to get S-Video output without modification to the mainboard, Google is your friend in this case. Good luck!
