This is such great advice. I would add in terms of artwork, a 'focal' gallery wall of original artwork in varying styles, frames and sizes gives a great 'homely' feel. With furniture, I always believe it needs to be curated and updated over time. Not one piece in my lounge matches. I moved into the house with a second hand 1990s habitat sofa with an intention of moving up to a bespoke Heal's & Co velvet 3 seater. Don't spend money on a stop gap piece but keep your intention on the piece you do want. Also, buy furniture/art/accessories with passion. If you love it when you first saw it, chances are you will love it for 10, 20 Infinate years. lastly, play with scale and height. The can often inform the layout.

Fantastic tips Martin! When we first start our decorating journey, it’s easy to pick pieces that simply function for our immediate needs. @@JulieKhuu I understand both viewpoints. But, I would also like to point out that you can have luxury décor (lux is how I roll too), but on a smaller scale, so that makes the lux look more attainable. Like I live in a two-bedroom apartment in New York City and I have expensive, traditional taste, so a lot of my décor is fit for a castle or a manor house, but I live in a normal sized apartment- no huge rooms like a castle or manor, but the décor is fit for one! :-D And, PS- nothing is very expensive, it just looks expensive. Yes, performance fabrics! Select a fabric that is easy to clean, could have removable cushions to throw in the wash, or one that is optimized with synthetic fibers so you can simply spray and wipe it down. You make a valid point, but isn’t the primary function of an American living room, especially for couples or singles, watching TV? Most Americans aren’t humming around the house, waiting on someone to enjoy the living room we can’t because we establish it for the purpose of its primary function, which is television. It’d be nice to hear a designer treat the living room how it’s actually treated - as a hub for entertainment. I can’t remember the last time I voluntarily hung out with people in a room that has no entertainment. It’s non-sensical to the average person. Your points are great, but aboveboard for typical people.
@JulieKhuu
3 жыл бұрын
It’s split 50/50. I have clients who wouldn’t dream of putting a TV in the living area. They keep it in the bedroom/ private areas so the living room is used as a gathering space devoid of technology. It’s becoming increasingly popular, especially if you have a family room or loft as a dedicated entertainment hub. But I get you, if you only have one room and you need a TV, the living room would be the place to put it (see my own home for example)

Julie really enjoying these do and don’t videos. Have you considered adding a video segment where you give advice to people with pictures of their spaces? That way it’s a bit more realistic to our normal lives? Many of the example pictures you use are more of professional staged rooms and really not for everyday people like myself. Again, loving your videos and learning a lot, especially the kitchen do and don’t as I am planning on redoing my kitchen which is just wayyyyyy past a redo and I want to make sure I get it right because this will the only time I redo it and it has to last me for a long time lol.

I have 5 year olds so would love to know how to keep a beautiful home for family living as well as entertaining friends. I’m sure your beautiful daughter is moving quickly around the house too now that she is 1!!! Thank you Julie, adore you x

I see people talking about "regular homes". I believe that what Julie is saying is that these ideas can be done in any home. At the end she talks about buying the best that you can afford which is true no matter what (in my opinion). Your home is what you make of it.

Hi Julie. I absolutely love your channel! I am not a person who is great with the ambiguity of design, but watching you break down the design process has helped me tremendously. Do you have recommendations on where to find quality furniture? I notice really unique pieces in your videos/photos. Do you have a video on your fave interior design places for furniture?

Love this series. Keep an coming...foever! I'm considering a FOCAL wall right now. The wall has a fireplace with an uncoordinated mantle piece. The sandstone brick has varying shades of gray and dark taupe colors. I want to pull on the taupe and light mortar so the gray is less noticiable, but haven't found a color yet. I hope it works out!
@JulieKhuu

You can always custom mix a color based on your brick LT. Just take a picture of the color up close and bring it to your local paint vendor to mix. It’s free and you’ll get the perfect match 👍🏻

I love your videos but can you PLEASE do a video on the type of coffee table to use with a reclining sofa. I've been going crazy trying to find the best solution for what to put in front of the sofa to avoid the emptiness that exists now. It's not a sectional - just a regular double reclining sofa. Thank you

I clear the reclining depth when pulled out and specify a coffee table within those maximum parameters Dez. You may also use nesting tables or side tables that are light enough to move around 👍🏻
