I want to thank you for what you do! You must have spent a lot of time looking for all those words in different movies and cutting them. I also like it how you use all the words in a context, and it's really easier to memorize the words you teach that way. Thank you a lot for the efforts you make to help us get better at English! Keep up the great work!

Hey teacher! I want to say... " thank you for your videos". I really felt very American with these expressions though I'm Colombian. I didn't know these words before. I will share these expressions with my Facebook friends who are learning American English too. English is my favorite language and once again..." Thank you!". KZitem is my English teacher now. I don't need expensive English textbooks nor English tutors; not even expensive academies to learn and to improve my English. The best of all...it's free!

There's nothing bad with like really. It's an interjection which is used to moderate the flow of conversation. People like to exaggerate it for comedic or denigrating effect, but I don't see what makes it a bad habit to use it naturally. It's one of the most common words in spoken English. 'Like' can honestly be really important in the way that a lot of people speak. It's also different from the like used in place of 'think' or 'say.' Where am older person might say "so i says and then he says and then she says," you might day "so i was like and he was like and she was like." Yeah, there's a certain style of speech which is very exaggerative and associated with young people which uses like a lot, but I think its stigma has a lot more to do with the stress and intonation of it, and its heavy use of exaggerative language which does include 'like' but also things like 'literally' or 'totally.' It's really the combination of all of those things as well as the mood which is often difficult to tell (it's often meant to be a lot more sarcastic or passive aggressive by using hyperbolic language which can be difficult to get. I struggle with it myself sometimes). But all of these are used very commonly including like, outside of that exaggerative youngspeech. Like, you know?

So, now I'm like 'This lesson is like super awesome''. The thing about Jon Hancock really amazed me. Thank you very much! And one more thing. I've noticed that some young Americans often add ''.. 'n stuff or ... n' sh.t '' to every other sentence, along with LIKE

“Like” is a useful word if it’s not overused. It’s a good “approximator.” It was like…3 inches long.” Approximately 3 inches long. “She was like…..” It means that you’re paraphrasing what she said. But it’s definitely overused! I actually remember when it moved from surfer/valley girl vocabulary into Midwest teenager speech. It was when I was a teen in the mid nineties. It was so catchy that you ended up using it without even thinking about it.

Thanks for commenting. Glad you enjoyed the lesson. The use of LIKE is widespread, and the example you mention is extremely common and I use it the way you mentioned. And you're right, it's common to say, "and I was like (direct quote)," which takes the place of "to say." People may use this when telling a story. Just keep in mind "to be like" does not always mean "to say." (This is like the best movie.) 😉👍

WOW dude you're LIKE the best teacher I wish you were my English teacher, Im a Filipino and I often use English like everyday and I want my english to sound more "american" and this video is the best. You sound so american. I subscribed! oh btw how about these expressions: "you can say that again", " didn't see that coming", "get ahold of yourself", "oh come on!", these are expressions too right? "whatever" is my favourite I always use it coz it just sounds kinda sarcastic and I like it.
