Thanks for this. Sometimes I get beautiful shavings and then after I sharpen the blade and reset everything, it just stinks - I get super grainy cuttings. So I'm messing something up. Back to the shop to practice and get better (hopefully).

First time viewer here. Lots of good information, thank you. One thing i wanted to comment on. I remember 55-56 years ago being severely chastised by my dad for NOT turning one of his planes on it's side when not actively using it. He told me to never put the plane down on it's sole unless the blade was fully retracted. Something I follow to this day. Especially the planes I now have that were his.RIP. I see that you have all of the planes on your bench sitting upright. What are your thoughts on Dad's rule?

Great video James! I'm having some issues with my new no 5. The lever cap keeps coming off when retracting the blade and the adjustment wheel is far too stiff. My theory is as follows… I've found that due to how there is no clearance between the cap iron and iron (prev owner over flattened the edge in pursuit of having it mate flat with the back of the blade), the lever cap is sitting parallel under the lever cap screw instead of at an angle. This means as the blade is retracted, the lever cap is easily pulled up and off as the screw isn't blocking it's ability to travel up the body of the plane. The only way to somewhat secure the lever cap means I have to really tighten the lever cap screw to sandwich it to lever cap etc as opposed to having only moderate pressure and the angle of the lever cap block it’s path of potential movement. This could explain why the adjustment wheel is incredibly tough to turn past the point of play/backlash also. If I set the lever cap screw so I can turn the adjustment wheel easily enough, the lever cap is essentially free moving and not secured at all. Annoyingly, I don’t have a replacement cap iron to hand yet so I can’t test this theory. Have you ever encountered this and does my reasoning hold water y'reckon? Edit: Right, turns out it has been a perfect storm of mechanical shortcomings; the cap iron is far too flat and the lever cap has had the "tail" of the kidney bean opening filed down/broken off meaning it can easily become dislodged. Time to source replacements for both and see how it fares.

It sounds like your lover cap might be too tight. It should be a good bit looser than you would expect. Loose enough. You can push the iron around with your hand but not loose enough. It will move when you tap the plane.

If the depth adjustment is tight that might mean that the lever cap is screwed down a little bit too tight. How tight that screw is on top determines how easy it all moves in and out. The chip breaker screw determines if the chip breaker will move against the iron or not.

If it's not sitting flat on the frog, then there's something holding it out. It might be that the frog is in the wrong place. It might be that it's not fitting onto the lateral adjuster. If the iron is sticking out too far then the depth adjuster needs to be moved farther up. If it can't move up anymore and it still sticking out then you have the wrong chip breaker. If you want me to take a look at it more, feel free to send me an email. I generally don't see replies here. jameswright@woodbywright.com

I'm usually pretty decent with hand tools, but I've been having trouble with a number of hand planes I inherited. For lack of a better description, the soles generate too much friction as I'm running them over the wood. I've already got my planer irons sharpened up to about 9,000 grit and at the correct angle while keeping the edges square. But I can try running my plane across a a board without even an iron in it, and it takes all my strength to get it to judder across (and I'm a big guy raised on farmwork. If holding a calf down with one hand so I can brand it with the other is just a day ending in Y, I'm leaving the boards singed from the force and friction after a few passes.) Everyone tells me to flatten the sole. Well, my great great grandaddy did that back in 1902 and the soles are flat enough to correct rulers. All I can think of is that the soles need to be polished to reduce friction. I have car polishing wheels, cutting compounds, sandpaper that goes up to 20,000 grit, and a set of Japanese whetstones that were traditionally used to polish a samurai's swords. Thing is, I don't want to ruin my planes. To what grit do the soles need to be worked? And how often? I don't want to grind my soles after each use like a chef's knife until there's nothing left. But nowhere can I get anyone to tell me how smooth, in any way you wish to measure it, the planer soles need to be. Help a guy out here?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
2 жыл бұрын
You don't need to flatten the sole. It'll work perfectly fine just the way it is. If there's too much friction between the soul and the wood, the answer is a little bit of oil or Wax. I generally use a paste wax that I make from beeswax and raw Linseed oil. But pretty much any wax will do. I know a lot of people who just rub a candle on the soul. If you want me to look at something specific, feel free to send me an email. I'd be glad to talk you through it. jameswright@woodbywright.com

@40:40 don't they only harden part of the cutting iron? I thought the steel isn't hardened all the way to the keyhole (the keyhole for the chip breaker screw). Is that true?
@WoodByWrightHowTo
3 жыл бұрын
Close plain irons are hardened all the way. It's just easier to heat the whole thing up in an oven It is to heat one section with a flame. That also leads to stresses in the iron to do just one section of it. A hundred years ago plus it was common to laminate the steel and the Japanese still do that in which case then you get a hard steel on the very cutting edge and a softer steel on the bevel side.

Thanks for the video! I recently restored a Stanley No 4 (from 1930-31 according to a site) and I am happy with the way it turned out. However, the only thing that I could not fix was the lateral adjustment leaver, that thing wackes like a dogs tail (a huge amount of play). It seems to work (?) I guess (I am new to woodworking) or at least it doesn't seem to change blade alignment when it moves. The ratteling while working with it is anoying though. Since there are no screws to change/tighten: do you have any idea how to tackle that?

Kobalt are very poor planes. Most of the time they can be made wo work but you have to be constantly adjusting them as they do not hold settings. It sounds like you got a digestive chipbreaker. The only thing you can do with it is to back the chipbreaker off from the tip by an 1/8"

Generally if the screw is bent you pull it out and replace it. I'm assuming you're talking about the depth adjustment with the knob on the back. I've never seen that one bent before but if so crush it down with a pair of vise grips and you should be able to turn it out of the frog.

Hi James, really informative video thanks. I have a number of Bailey planes that I’ve inherited, in different stages of restoration. But I have a common problem with all of them. Having sharpened the blades, adjusted the chip-breaker to about 1/32 away from the cutting edge, I run out of adjustment before the blade extrudes enough to make a cut. I’ve tried adjusting the frog to no avail, and replaced blades but no success. I guess maybe the chip breakers have been filed too short, but it’s really odd that they are all have the same problem. I am worried that I am making some fundamental errors when reassembling the planes, can you advise please
@WoodByWrightHowTo
Жыл бұрын
That can happen for a bunch of reasons. For the most common is that the slot that the yoke fits into the chip breaker has been worn out over the years and it can't push it as far forward as it used to. It could be that you have a newer thicker iron in there and the yolk can't push it farther forward. It could be that your yoke is worn out and doesn't have the ability to push it all the way forward. The good news is you really only need it that close when you're doing fine smoothing. For most other operations I have it about 1/8" away from the tip.
