Great video, as usual...keep them coming! Regarding the rough 2D mechanical layout, I find that using PowerPoint, Google Slides, or LibreOffice Impress to mock-up major components is much easier than cutting-out the outlines from cardboard and gluing them down. Of course, with FreeCAD, it's not that much harder to do a 3D mock-up, either.

FreeCAD is definitely on my learning list! So true about using any slides program for doing the mockups digitally. I did the paper prototypes to have a physical feel of the size, but I guess you can do them digitally and print out as well for "repeatability".

KiCad is an Open Source Electronics Design software similar to Altium or Eagle. www.kicad.org/ You can download it for many common operating systems here: www.kicad.org/download/
