1 start writing from start of PhD. 2 avoid over thinking. 3 Design a simple model experiment as a learning experiment. 4 slow but steady wins the race, make a routine to do things from start and do them every day. 5 ineffective communication (stay in touch with your lab-mates and supervisor. Ask and discuss with them. (Don’t forget networking) 6 Be patient while facing setbacks.

You are so right to emphasise the importance of good time management! So many PhD students think they have plenty of time and then WHOOSH, they are already a year from the end of their scholarship and a tsunami of draft and editing deadlines looms. PhD students should start writing from an early stage, even getting into the habit of writing early on will assist timely completion. Spending 1-2 years reading and thinking without putting pen to paper is a big mistake.

'New work of sufficiently high quality' - I am going to stick that up by my desk. As a final year PhD researcher, I find this immensely comforting, thank you. It does, indeed, really push your limits! Thanks :)

Thanks, Jasmin. I'm glad you find this useful. I really think that having unrealistically high expectations is often the worst enemy to finishing a PhD and staying sane while working towards the degree.
