This was something I considered when I was designing my own fantasy world. Heck, two of my villainous characters were created in-universe to thwart all the over-the-top elements inherent in most fantasy stories and exploit hand-waves commonly given by their creators. "If the enemy is wielding a massive blade, primarily try to get in close and wrap around with gladius. Charge after they miss and then let them have it. Try to use magic to turn huge enemy weapons into gold, making weapon massively too heavy and useless. If their weapon is already gold or otherwise magically protected, use anti-magic. It disadvantages you too, but it's a bigger hit to the enemy as they need this hand-wave to function at all whereas your sword just doesn't dull. ... If all else fails, just cough up the acidic nerve gas and flank them. You're not called the Basilisk Twins simply because you're dicks!"

Andrew The Mighty or brittle glass/flint. Any kind of rock with very small grains aligned in random ways (microscopically small pieces of calcified bits randomly arranged in a hard to predict pattern), just strike the object and get a sharp triangular piece to start knapping on, and boom. Against soft body tissue, it’s absolutely lethal, especially if it fractures and bits of the weapon/bits of glass get into the chest where the vitals are and start impaling vital organs and causing internal bleeding and eventually just kills whoever got a piece of glass/glass like stone inside of their chest cavity where all the vitals are. Plus, the chest is pretty much the biggest target to shoot for. I have tried knapping glass before and I haven’t found a single metal blade that is sharper than the glass shards I made. I once tried shaving with a glass bit and it didn’t just shave my leg, it started to bury itself inside my leg with absolutely no sawing motion used at all. Just a light press at the wrong angle and I was bleeding all the way down my leg. Didn’t need stitches since the cut was just so clean that I could press the bits of flesh together and bandage them.
@bobbyhill4118
5 жыл бұрын
Schwarzvogel1 You’re not wrong and it’s because of the type of grain that makes up the inside of the point. More broad designs like those of knives and arrowheads, or like broken glass bottles, would work. A sword that long would just simply break when you would try swinging it at first. You’d be left with either a shattered sword and a sharp bit where it broke off, leaving you with a weird looking knife, or it would snap in half.

I like to think the Dragonslayer from Berserk is the perfect example of a stupid sword done well. It is quite literally introduced and refered to as a stupid useless slab of metal, designed for a non-sensical task. I.e. "Craft a sword that could slay a dragon", when dragons seemingly don't exist. It isn't inherently magical, and only gains its later magical powers through use. The sword is literally junk in-universe, and only exists to contextualise Guts' ungodly strength. "It was too big to be called a sword. Massive, thick, heavy, and far too rough. Indeed, it was a heap of raw iron"
@granmastersword
6 жыл бұрын
Jeppe Ulrich Lomholt Indeed. The sword is virtually unusable to the average human. Only Guts is capable to not only wield it but also use it with great effectiveness. It helps that before Dragonslayer Guts wielded a similar sword that was stupidly long and dull and got to kill many with it

That is exactly why I love it so much, because its history and very existance does a lot of worldbuilding and says a lot about Guts as a character(both regarding personality, abilities and role in the story) and the enemies he fights. The author of Berserker gets that even relatively simple design desicions like the weapon a character uses can do a TON of work for your story.

Berserk did it RIGHT. It presents that unreasonable weapon but creates an internal logic for why that protagonist can use it (he's pretty much the god of gainz and twohanders), why he would use it (he fights monsters that just laugh over ordinary sword wounds), and why the sword would exist (it was made to kill a dragon, so it had to be able deliver huge blows even at the cost of handiness). And then it shows us that the "normal" people in that story are just as puzzled about that sword as we are.

What does logic matter when huge demons get eviscerated in the most gruesome manners. Those manga are not created to be locigcal, they are made to entertain. I mean, if you'd go further, how would Guts even be able to use his iron hand, even considering the magnetic nature of it, to get a good grip on his sword and how would he switch grips. Remember, it is not a cybernetic implant, that would at least allow him to do that.

It's kind of funny that the justification for massive over-the-top swords are that the person is strong enough to wield as if they were a normal sword, ignoring that if they just used a normal sword they would be far more dangerous due to their overwhelming speed and strength not being handicapped by the weight. As a side note even if you had the strength to wield something like the buster sword easily, it would still be hard to manoeuvre while swinging and wouldn't be worth it.

Been reading a lot of Chinese fantasy Web novels. This is the most WTF weapon I've found. "Holding onto the scarlet greatsword in midair, his muscles tightened and his veins bulged. He felt that he was not holding onto a sword, but a mountain! The weight he felt in his arms was at least ten times that of Dragon Fault!! *It was at least a hundred thousand kilograms!!*" Moar description "The length of the blade was more than nine feet. The sword of the hilt was straight and bulky, and above the hilt, the base of the blade was shockingly more than two feet in width. Moving up the blade, the width of the blade irregularly shrank, and at the end of the blade, it had already shrank into an incomparably sharp tip, radiating with a cold, crimson red light!" 9' long 2' wide. 😲

Well, you're right at everything, but in the Elder Scrolls universe the "glass" material is actually a type of metal, not actual glass. It's just called "glass" due to its colour. The weapons and armour are made from actual metal ingots called "malachite" (remember, not Earth's malachite mineral, it's just based on that. It's Nirn's malachite metallic material). Besides that, great video - as always ^^

+ekimolaos This reply is copied and pasted due to it being basically the exact same thing I would say here anyways. Glass isn't actually made of malachite. Bethesda did the usual thing they do and tampered with the established lore to suit their particularly stupid ideas. Malachite in no way, shape, or form, would be suitable for armor or weaponry. Glass was originally magical volcanic glass similar to Ebony(which no one changed into not-the-wood-Ebony, they just left it as fancy named volcanic glass) and like a green form of Obsidian. So yes, Glass(and Ebony) are both magical volcanic GLASS materials used in the Elder Scrolls universe.
@joaogomes9405

I believe malachite in elder scrolls is similar to obsidian, but less brittle. And since we know obsidian can be made into pratical weapons, like the macuahuitl, and is famous for being sharper than even high quality metal blades, a sword with the same properties as obsidian but without the chance of shattering on impact because it is less brittle would be an effective weapon.

Yeah, Claymores are great if they're well made and well kept. Light enough to control, long enough to stay relatively safe, and heavy enough to do damage. Another perk of that weight is that they're hard to stop quickly, so an opponent can't just deflect it or block it as easily. It's a two handed blade, and a long one at that, which are the main 'flaws' of it.

kubaGR8 When talking about the material itself weak means in structural integrity. Bronze, specifically weak bronze (structurally) is very easily bent, crushed, warped, or miss shaped and bronze in general cant be hammer forged effectively because its too pliable a metal. Though obsidian tools also tends to keep its edge longer than most bronze tools, but for a much different reason than strength in the material, so I guess its kinda both, but mostly the breaking part.

As for weight reducing spells, Force = mass*acceleration So by reducing the weight you are, at least I'm making the assumption that you are, reducing the density of the blade, which means there's less mass, which means there's less force. Then when you do hit your target, there's more surface area involved so the force gets dissipated across a larger area so there's even less oomph behind your strike.
@Skallagrim
8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Alvarez Yep, that's a good point. A large low-density object is no better than a small high-density object for generating force, possibly worse.
@Bluecho4
8 жыл бұрын
+Skallagrim Plus, a less dense blade is likely to bend, warp, or break when force is applied directly to it.
@caiqcorrea
8 жыл бұрын
+Daniel Alvarez well, not exactly. If by reducing the mass by, lets say, 50%, putting the same force on the sword would make it hits with the same force. The problem is that it will need less force to desacelerate. Also, the resistence force of the air is proportional to the speed that the object is moving, which means, more acceleration, more speed, more resistence force, less acceleration(and that acceleration reduction is even bigger because u made the sword lighter), less force when hitting the target. There's also the problem that this sword are larger, rising its surface contact with the air and thus rising the resistence force of the air.
@MrVindictus1
8 жыл бұрын
You know... I don't think of magical spells as a resmith... They're supposed to do otherwise impossible things. A weight reducing spell would just do that. Not change density or whatever. Otherwise it wouldn't be magic, it would be simple science.

In fairness, a wound from a saw blade, while not as deep as that from a "smooth" blade, would be devastatingly hard to heal well and likely to infect. A saw weapon could be seen being made by a person with a sadistic streak, or tyrants using scary factor of not only nasty looking weapons but ones you don't want to get wounded by. Also I believe the Elder Scrolls games explain that the "Glass" material isn't really glass, just a exotic metal or alloy. At the end of the day, if one does an exotic fantasy weapon one has to back it up with stated logic within the fictional work. Naturally the "tribal tattoo weapons" as I call them can never have logic on their side.
@Skallagrim
8 жыл бұрын
+Evan Dawson It would be nasty but also more shallow. It doesn't help you to know that your opponent will take a long time to heal if you can't disable them quickly and are killed as a result.
@KohuGaly

+Skallagrim An important thing to consider is, which would hurt more. I've heard people not even noticing that they've got stabbed/cut by sharp knifes. Sometimes cuts and stabs even bleed less when knife was sharp, vs. being blunt (that's why byonets tend to be relatively blunt). I can imagine saw-blade doing much more painful wounds (albeit not so deep), which might be more effective in incapacitating your enemy. There is also another thing to consider with saw-blades. They are technically also guard-blade hybrid (opponents blade get stuck in particular positions, instead of sliding onto your hands). That's probably a bad thing though, because it provides less leverage than letting the blade slide towards proper guard.
@GlosurDarloc

One of the deadly sins of wordbuilding is having magic and or supernatural objects/abilities and not explaining them fully or making them realistic to the world it is set in. That is the primary reason why i absolutely loath the final fantasy games.

I'm sorry, but, seriously? WoW swords are more realistic than most fantasy games? Look at the following: Ashbringer Frostmourne Thunderfury Ashkandi, Greatsword of the Brotherhood Warglaives of Azzinoth Jin'rohk, The Great Apocalypse This is just a small list of "sword" weapons from World of Warcraft and your telling me these "swords" are more realistic? Have you ever read a history book? These aren't anywhere close to realistic. In fact, the weapons and armor are so huge, bizarre, and unwieldy looking that it reminds of something out of the Power Rangers. It's one of my pet peeves with Blizzard. Look at weapon design in Diablo 2 and compare it to WoW. They used to try to line up somewhat with realism and now it's just obscene.

Imagine a thin, average length, smooth bladed sword, with correct weight proportions between the hilt and blade, and the blade is made out of graphene. Now that would be an absolute menace in any fight. Btw, you had amazing reasoning in this video.

I would actually argue that while a toothed blade will not cut as deep, the benefit of it could be argued that it may cause more surrounding tissue damage, similar to a hollowpoint slug from a firearm. Its a pretty niche benefit though, considering a deeper cut is more likely to damage vital organs rather than just surrounding tissue. It could be seen as intended to cause more felt pain rather than lethal damage. It also has better ability to deal more damage though in the context of a grapple: being able to saw into your enemy. Though if you have that much control over the grapple, you probably could have done away with the sword and choked them to death, assuming a humanoid target.

What about Ludwig's? Sorry but no. The trick in bloodborne weapons make them not viable in the real world. Glass blades in sky rim aren't actually glass, off you read the book on smithing materials you'll learn that glass is actually malalikite and other materials mixed together and smelted in such a way that the end product looks a bit like glass, but the actual sword is incredibly strong and sharp because of the materials and how the sword is made (of course the material doesn't make a sharp sword if the smith doesn't make a blade, so it's not just material that makes the sword sharp) the point is in sky rim lore the materials are very good for making swords

+Matthew Strupp Either way, its a hard mineral of some kind, chances are it would make a great cutting edge, once, and then shatter. Real weapons have existed over time made of volcanic glass, but they tended to be a wooden club, with glass blades glued in so they could be replaced when they broke, which often would be after one strike.

I imagine giant swords would work with some kind of enchantment that offsets its mass while under the control of the wielder, trickling in more of its own momentum as resistance is met during a swing, and totally offsetting it while holding it normally or while being maneuvered with no force applied to the weapon except from the user. If the magic system cannot defy laws of thermodynamics, then the magic itself must apply energy from its own reserves. Otherwise the benefits are effectively null from having a huge sword to begin with
