The debate has arisen often also in the case of the Mute Swan. Authentic wild vagrants from Eurasia (banded) have been reported on a few occasions, but escapees from domestic waterfowl collections are more frequently those that are reported in nearby wilderness. It is so frustrating as the possibility of bona fide wild Mute Swans from Europe exists too. I always add a question mark and go with the most likely probability, which is escape from captivity. Escaped Mallards are easier to spot because of frequent differences in plumage patterns, whereas escaped Mute Swans are indistinguishable from wild ones.

Hi Derek and Ryan, I live in the NE of England. Shelducks are common breeders less than a mile from my house. Whilst your bird does seem tame, I have seen our birds behave exactly like that. The habitat it is in is not usual in the UK where they live on the seashore and in estuaries but occasionally when they enter harbours or inland waters this behaviour would be quite normal. Nice vids.

That's super interesting! Thanks for the inside info. I'm honestly not sure what was ever decided about this bird.

Yep but too be honest they always seem to stick with other shelduck and are rarely seen alone or hanging out with other species of duck.

I have seen these birds lots here in the UK. They like coastal areas like Brent geese

i have heard odd chickadees so i might have a hybrid and both black capped and Carolina chickadee

If it's in Michigan I would only expect Black-capped in the southern part, although if you're in northern MI you could also be hearing Boreal Chickadees. They will have a much more nasal call.

If it is an escaped bird, any thoughts on how likely it is to survive on its own? Would it migrate?

It’s hard to say. I haven’t seen it reported in a while so it may have taken off to somewhere warmer. In warmer climate areas escaped birds normally just hang out in parks and other urban areas.

Very interesting. They've been reported here in Quebec but I havent been able to drive up North yet to go see them. Curious to see if they might be escaped birds too or wild... i didn't realize they are from Eurasia! I'll have to drive up and find them.

I don't believe anyone attempted to band it.

Sadly you got the female, the males are much prettier but this is definitely escapees… in the Uk they aren’t nearly as friendly.
