Taiwanese are the nicest people. I often hear old people in the country say “bo ah! Bo ah!” sounds in context like “no way” maybe??????

The have you eaten is also used as a kind of a goodbye/goodnight/how are you (I'm not sure which as it's been a while since I asked my Ama and Akong) but essentially whenever I asked them how to translate one of those things from english to Taiwanese they said the kind of equivalent was jia ba bue- which might explain why the person waved while they said it.

I can understand most of the phrases. My parents come from Tong‘an Xiamen (廈門同安) in the Southern Min 閩南 region, so we have a different accent. Here are some: 1. 你很漂亮 - lih jin sui 3. 沒關係 - bue yao gin 4. 你好 - lih ho 6. 你要去哪裏 - lih berh kih doh lo 8. 你吃飽了嗎?- jia ba a berh 9. 你很帥 - lih jin yan dao 12. 謝謝 - gam sia

Same here! It was my Angong Anma who come from Xiamen, but I am trying to relearn the language.
When she said "bo i ding" it sounded like Vietnamese to me. Taiwanese Hokkien sounds so beautiful to me, I want to learn it :)

Wait I thought pai se was embarrassing? I’ve always heard my mom say that when she argues with my dad, so kinda confused about the translation there.
@areitu
Жыл бұрын
Sort of- as far as I can tell, it implies you’ve embarrassed yourself. It’s sort of like a combination of “excuse me” an”I’m sorry” and doesn’t translate to English 1.1 You can say it if you bump into someone on accident, or “paiseh, i don’t understand you”
