Considering what saltpeter was used to make and the circumstances that conspired to make that the case, I whole heartedly disagree with your assessment. I don't think the ai or like 90% of players would be able to deal with it

@Jay2JayGaming

@@lafilozadeljhonny1977 I know. But you're forgetting the part where the reason it made Chile rich was because the only significant source of it in the world was a small island so caked in bird shit they could carve it away like the blocks of stone they used to build the pyramids. Still, even with all that guano, the resource was ultimately limited to the extent that at the turn of the 20th century, Chile saw the writing on the wall and starting cutting back on exports. People were predicting a shortage of nitrate-based fertilizers and therefore the collapse of food-supply in the first-world, causing untold famine and population decline. There was then a race to develop a process to create potassium nitrate on an industrial scale, and thankfully, a handful of chemists figured it out before things could get dire. And just so we're clear, I know that there were other ways to make saltpeter, but the thing most people forget is that while it could keep up with pre 19th century demand, once people started mass-manufacturing gunpowder and fertilizer, this was no longer the case. To make saltpeter relevant in the way it was during the 19th century means completely cutting out fertilizers from chemical plants and drastically reducing fertilizer output from ranches, then creating these small deposits around the world that can't possibly keep up with demand except for the one gigantic one in Chile. While it's an interesting geopolitical situation and caused some very interesting things irl, the game just can't handle it and there's no good way to make it. It's not just that the game's AI isn't that smart, AI in general just isn't that smart.
@EtanRedKnight

@@Jay2JayGaming I think you're confusing Guano (seagull sht) with Salitre (potassium nitrate or saltpeter). Yes, the greatest deposits are on island/rocks, but it's pretty common in most of the semiarid Pacific cost. Guano was a great reasource, most of the early peruvian development depended of Guano revenue. But saltpeter is other beast entirely, is mostly mined deep in the Atacama desert. New towns where build deep in it, the only source of everything whas the saltpeter revenue....the "white gold". And Saltpeter is mostly more eficient and powerful than Guano. But yeah, sinthetic saltpeter and the great depression killed the mining industry, most of the deposits are still there, never really run out. But anyway, i think is okay how the game is. I mean, isn't Sulfur deposits kinda fullfiling the rol of saltpeter deposits in the Pacific? Tarapacá and Antofagasta provinces have the most of it in South América in the game
@Jay2JayGaming
Жыл бұрын
@@EtanRedKnight Actually I'm not. Potassium nitrate is not a mineral, it's exclusively created through chemical processing of excrement. The deposits they found in caves, for instance, are just thousands of years worth of bat guano that has turned into potassium nitrate through a naturally occurring leeching process. Now, saltpeter and 'nitrates' are names that have been used to describe several different things through history. One of these is sodium nitrate, aka 'Chile Saltpeter', or in it's mineral form, Nitratine. This is the stuff that was extracted from the desert. However, sodium nitrate is actually an inferior ingredient for both fertilizers and black powder. To begin with, it's significantly more hygroscopic- so it's much harder to keep dry. It also burns slower, which was a pretty bad thing for guns, as it means it necessitates a longer barrel to get the full effect (and barrels were already super long back then). As for fertilizers, while it is a bit more potent source of nitrates, it also entirely lacks potassium, which is a problem because that's also a necessary part of fertilizer. What's more, the issues that I brought up before still stand. The process for isolating either sodium nitrate or potassium nitrate from mineral form or from regular excrement, was extremely labor intensive and resulted in not a whole lot of usable product. This wasn't an issue with naturally occurring guano deposits, because as I said before, it's already been through a natural leeching process- which means the hard part is already done. The deposits found in caves however, just aren't significant enough to sustain industrial levels of fertilizer or gunpowder production. It just so happens that one island off of Chile had appreciable deposits _at the necessary purity_ to accomplish this task for any reasonable length of time. Unfortunately, those deposits, as vast as they were, just could not keep up with the increasing demands of higher population numbers.

I've had the same problem as Mexico, yet my deduction was that the gold mines were the culprits, combined with neglecting some of my other local industries like textiles or furniture. If you focus mostly on gold mines, your other industries will have incredible demand for their produced goods and will be able to raise their wages to a similar level of the gold mines. Your government and military wages are dependent on the average wages of types of buildings, without regarding the total amount of employees. So while you will still have hundreds of thousands of peasants, the few people that are employed get such massive wages that the average wage per type of building gets raised to astronomical levels and you will no longer be able to pay your government or military. In my Mexico run, my average wages on medium level were 16.5$ in 1845 and I was paying over 200k just for government employees. If you want to focus on gold mines, you should also heavily invest into ports and convoys and import as many goods as possible, so that the wages of buildings you're not focusing on are never able to rise above what the gold mines pay, keeping the average wage in check.
@TheDirtyShaman

@@Walesball1214 As Australia you are part of the British market. There used to be a bug which allowed businesses to indefinitely compete for employees by raising their wages. If you are part of a giant market, none of your consumer goods become absurdly expensive, so no buildings are able to compete with the wages of your gold mines and thus your average wage will not be affected as much.

I love that this game is able to teach real-life economics lessons. Subsidizing labour, welfare payments, and the like drive up wages to unsustainable levels, just like too much of that does in reality. Subsidizing industries should be reserved for when you have a temporary spike in costs or drop in demand, or when first getting a new good online to transition to a new production method. Nice to see you making Vicky 3 content, Zieley. Cheers!

Don't subsidize a building to fill a government good expense, instead go down the production chain and cheapen output goods until your building is making 0 profit, then make profit using cheaper input goods, repeat until you can't lower the price anymore (-75%). When you exhaust all your peasants, it becomes a matter of competition for workers between the buildings, and having demand for more employment in form of worker deficit. Subsidies in this game work as a non-profit motive for production, so you wont really make money from subsidies on goods, instead it's used to produce things like infrastructure or qualification, providing benefits that are obviously really good for you, and don't directly produce money for the building.
