The frantic desire to help others because no one helps her. The frustration when she can't help (and self-loathing that results from her own failures). Britta demonstrates why so many well-meaning people in the world still can't save it. The fundamental shortcoming of communities is that they defuse responsibility and it's a constant struggle to find an effective way to leverage those good intentions into actual outcomes. God, I love Community. Britta and Abed play so well off each other...

The M.O. for Britta as explained by Dan Harmon is, since people don't seem to particularly like her as a character, to make her the butt of the joke on the show, which would therefore endear her more to the masses. I've always found that frustrating though, considering I totally adore Britta as a character and thought she was kickass from the start...people just suck
@NerdMiGerd
3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I think this episode was where she hit her peak. She was the butt of the joke more this season, sure, but I think the writers did a great job on humanizing her, and putting her deepest flaws on full display here. She's a very broken person, like everyone in the main cast, and has a genuinely hard time connecting with others because of it. Unfortunately, they just don't do her right past this point. In Seasons 3 and 4 she got flanderized to hell, and the few good character moments she got in Season 6 just weren't enough. If they do make that movie, I think they should explore Britta a bit more.
@aa-to6ws
3 жыл бұрын
I still think the show handled the woman worse than its male characters. I have the feeling it was Dan Harmon projecting himself, reason why it seems certain beliefs and type of people receive far more criticism than others. (Like Shirley's beliefs, Britta's personality, and the sexualization of Annie across seasons) They truly worked on Annie to fix some issues, but they left the other woman aside with Britta's flanderization and straight up insulting Shirley's Christian beliefs.
@NerdMiGerd
3 жыл бұрын
@@aa-to6ws I think both the women and Pierce get pretty one-dimensional as the show goes on. For the most part, Jeff Troy and Abed tend to get the most development, with Annie somewhere just behind them. Yeah idk I think Shirley was always the weakest character for me, and as harsh as it sounds I barely felt her loss in season 6.
@andydyer6591
3 жыл бұрын
@@NerdMiGerd I definitely agree that she got flanderised to hell and her character was treated terribly in season 3 - whatever the writers intended. Making her a bit less serious and severe is one thing; diminishing her intelligence is just insulting. However, I would suggest watching season 4 again, with an open mind. They actually rehabilitated Britta’s character a lot in that season, and she felt a lot closer to her seasons 1-2 self. She wasn’t treated as stupid, she had some good displays of her intuitive intelligence and compassion, and the other characters are much less cruel to her (Jeff is even admonished by Pierce for being a jerk to her). That was a breath of fresh air after the worst of season 3.

I think crying Britta-Bot is so effective because we rarely see that side of Britta on the show. And even though the characters are animated in Abed's mind, we're still seeing a variation on what they're doing in real life. I think Abed's pitying critique of Britta cuts her pretty deeply.

I'm more on Britta's side here. She knows Abed's refusal to acknowledge his emotional problems will ultimately be a bad thing, but Abed - being the lovable, but overgrown man child he is - just rights her off as a heartless robot because she won't go along with all of his antics, as fun as they can be at times, for the sake of the real life consequences he might be facing.

One could say that the gravel had good intentions, but the way in which she traced it was completely out of place. There were severely times in the show where Brita would talk to him in an overly consoling tone like she was talking to an actual little kid, and Abed would just calmly respond because whatever the problem was wasn’t actually a big deal. I always wondered if he secretly resented her for that, like he found it patronizing or thought Brita was just trying to show off how good of a person she was by acting super caring. He never called her out on it, so I never knew if it actually bothered him or not, but maybe this song was his way of doing that. Or maybe I’m just reading too much into it.

I personally think that Britta does empathize with people, and that your description describes Jeff more than it does Britta (minus the self doubt, although Jeff has his insecurities too). I think people tend to focus on how characters react to her as opposed to how she may react to characters. She can be snarky sometimes, but she has been shown to be a good friend and a caring person and I think people tend to overlook that. She does have a goofy sense of humor, but no one gets it.

The rest of the characters have all sort of found a way to fit into the group. They've all adapted to each others' sense of humor and can really blend well. They can go off into random groups and still BE the study group. Britta doesn't have that. She's still growing and struggling to fit in while maintaining her own identity. this is my favourite britta moment because, as usual, abed captures what i think is the true essence of her character. she wants nothing more than to help, in fact that's her instinct, but she trusts her routine programming of how to solve issues more than she does the people around her or even herself to an extent. she wants abed to get therapy because she knows that's a reliable path for people with mental health issues but doesn't trust him enough to seek it out at his own comfort or trust that she and the study group are reliable enough to anchor him and be his support blanket. abed always throws people like britta and shirley for a loop because those two characters have very concrete rules for how things should be handled and how people should be treated and those rules typically don't have the same effect on neurodivergent people. they both try to take on a kind of maternal role, not realising that he doesn't need teaching in the same way a kid would - britta tries to teach him how to act around people even though he has no desire to act differently and does pretty well already, whereas troy explains how friends mess with each other so abed understands but clarifies that he doesn't need to change anything about himself.

dhjgjkd her character peaked in season 2, because of the failings of her cynical ideals. Then when she began majoring in psychology in season 3, the idea of an emotional dunce as a psychologist became a comedic crutch. And her emotional stupidity became conflated with general stupidity. However, she's better in terms of character development, because unlike Season 1 Britta, Season 3 Britta believes in the group.
