Grew up on the Crow rez! And they always said when we talk or tell stories, we always talk with our hands lol. I didn’t realize as a kid my elders were naturally doing Crow sign language when talking. And today my non-indigenous friends kinda laugh & point out I always use my hands when I’m telling a wicked story 😂😂

i'm algonquin and alutiiq, and i've always struggled with ASL - especially since it is so heavy on over dramatic facial expressions, and i have neurologic disabilities that prevent me from controlling my face. crow sign language feels so much more in touch with how my families and i communicate than ASL! thank you so much for sharing

It is still used in Shoshone country today too! Good video, really enjoyed it ! I think he added some standard american sign as well or maybe they are Crow variations that I don't recognize.

@Shufei There are many fluent sign talkers at Crow Agency. I would say they are the most fluent sign talking tribe (highest amount of sign talkers) out of all the other tribes in this current time. At Crow fair when you look at any two older Indians, they will be talking sign.

Thanks for this! I, for one, think it is really important to preserve (preserve by use) PISL and other Indian languages.

Does he have a KZitem channel or anything like that to learn from? I know some PISL but I'd like to know it all and also teach others.

For most of it I found the native hand talk much easier to understand than the ASL. The signs seemed simpler and faster.

What?! It's so similar. I had no idea. So I could probably communicate with a deaf white person

Some Crow signs are similar to ASL signs----doesn't Crow SL predate ASL? Did ASL borrow these signs from CSL?

Crow sign is much more easier

Indian sign language is an effort to communicate (Spaniards and Native Americans) in spite of divergent spoken languages. Sign was always there, simple and to the point.
