I really hate the apple approach, makes everything sitting in a tin can

Hi, I don't know if I'm doing something wrong, I did some tests by grabbing the binaural version of my Atmos mixes from Apple music directly into the Mac and I created the binaural version with the audiomovers plugin starting from the master file played by the Dolby renderer... i two files sound different, I also did the same test with logic and in this case too they sound different. The binaural files generated by Logic and the Audiomovers plugin are identical.

I had always heard (and maybe this is obsolete at this point) that Apple throws out the Binaural settings and just uses the Mid setting for all objects. In this example, it definitely seems like Apple’s binaural settings sound somewhere between Mid and Far settings of the Dolby Renderer

Apple definitely throws out the binaural settings. They take a 7.1.4 re-render and spatialize it for headphones using their own algorhythms.

Thanks for the video Dave. To my ears, the Apple binaural version also imparts a tone of it´s own, it´s just not the distances vs panning. To be honest, I had trouble in hearing a convincing back directionality on either Dolby´s or Apple examples. I do that much better in my opinion with plugins like Dear Reality outputting to pairs of objects. The problem here is to fing the right balance as the output of the plugin will also be heard on speakers on consumer end, for those that have it, that is😁

Dave, for an ATMOS master eq/comp/clip/limit solution, have you looked at Hornet Samp?

I think I did at one point, but I don't think I tried it. I probably should at some point. I think I've been trying to avoid changing my bus compressor, though. :)

I just took a look at some videos on it, and it doesn't look like it would be for me. Right now it appears there's only one module available for it(which you apparently need a separate license for) and it's only a compressor/limiter. Where's the EQ? I would also be looking for something that would allow me to use plug-ins I already have, which it doesn't look like it does. Then a really big kicker to me is it looks like it's only one song at a time so you still need Dolby's Album Assembler or a DAW to work on multiple songs. There also aren't any advanced controls to adjust metadata beyond what the existing tools from Dolby can do. Maybe they're going to add more to it, but for now it doesn't seem like it does anything you can't already do in a DAW or one of Dolby's tool, so I don't really see the point in it.

Which do you like better, Dave?? In this example, the guitar sounded way better in Apple Spatial, but wasn't sure if that was just the coloration it was giving. I love Dolby's Binaural, but almost everyone listens to music on Apple Music, and by default are listening to the Spatial Rendering. Thanks!!

I prefer speakers. 😉 As an engineer, I prefer the Dolby because I have some control over that. As a listener, I'm mostly hearing the Apple version because I listen to Apple Music. I guess aside from that, I don't really have a preference of one over the other. Sometimes Apple sounds better for things I'm working on and sometimes Dolby. I think Apple's version is evolving faster than Dolby's, and I wonder if at some point Dolby should lose their binaural and just replace it with someone else's spatialization OR if this will just be something that ultimately falls on device manufacturers to do with manufacturers creating their own versions or licensing technology.

@@goingto11 I agree, speakers are king!! Just tested some white noise using Penteo's up-mix plug-in. Pro Tools>EXT Renderer>Logic Pro 11 and using objects for 7.1.4 and Logic's internal renderer. Switching between the near settings and Apple's Spatial Audio just sounds clearer to me. I honestly hope we figure out soon what will make or break these binaural settings. Apple's makes the most sense, if we are going for a speaker representation to replicate. Like you mentioned with the binaural settings, I cannot stand using "Far." In the case with up-mixing, Apple's sounds closer (to me) compared to the original 2.0 than having Dolby's binaural settings turned on at all. I typically just leave the settings "off" to just enhance the speaker version. It doesn't always benefit me to have up-mixing with binaural settings.

I'm usually "off" for LCR, and then everything else is usually near, I think. Although, with the way they have changed controlling binaural settings in Pro Tools 2024.6, I might start experimenting a little more.

Doesn’t the Atmos Renderer have the Apple Spatial monitoring option? Can you clarify why you needed the Audio Movers plugin?
@goingto11
3 ай бұрын
No. Apple does their own thing. I believe if you are mixing in Logic, you can hear it, but with any other DAW you currently need the plug-in/app or you can listen to an MP4 after export.

@@goingto11 It's been a minute since I used it, but there was an option in renderer preferences called “Spatial Coding Emulation” option
@goingto11

Correct. I believe that was related to the "clustering" that happens when Atmos is encoded for consumers.
@paulovmendes

@@M2000z Spatial Coding Emulation has nothing to do with Apple´s Spatial Audio. What it does is to replicate the clusters (kind of conglomerates of nearby objects in order to make it possible to compress them in groups) that are used for objects on the encoding process by the streaming platforms before it gets streamed. This is only an monitoring emulation though, it does not get encapsulated on the ADM file. I believe that on the latest standalone Dolby Renderer version, this feature has been removed.
