Nice video, my favourite motor is the BF, really nice torque curve at low rpm, max torque is at 2500rpm and all the way to 2500rpm is producing more torque than the FG motor in stock form petrol homologation. FG produces slightly more torque but this is produced at above 3000rpm only.

Good vid. There goes the cheap BA motors! Didnt happen to measure the head gaskets thicknesses did you? Also, i think you will find those oil leaks were from the power steering pumps. 2 жыл бұрын
@@5lcalais1 , thanks for your reply. Calling the con-rods that Barra six engines other than the “green top” E-gas engines got, then later, the turbocharged engines got,, as “skinny” is probably inaccurate. I expect the E-gas (carbureted LPG) engines got the thicker con-rods to resist bending if a back-fire occurs in the intake manifold when an intake valve is still open for a cylinder with a piston travelling up the cylinder. Such a situation is probably impossible with the (liquid phase EFI of LPG) EcoLPI engines, because their intake manifolds should only ever have air in them (no fuel mixture). As for the EcoLPI Barra engine’s 12:1 compression ratio, even higher compression may have been considered, but I expect the lowest equivalent octane rated LPG available at fuel station pumps had to be allowed for. The standard EcoLPI engines generate more torque & power than the naturally aspirated petrol Barra sixes. They’re excellent! One would think it’d have been better from a logistical & reliability standpoint, for Ford to have equipped all later Barra six engines with the thicker con-rods introduced in the E-gas engine. Do you have any links to factual information about the EcoLPI engine’s connecting rods that you can share here? I’d be interested to read more. Cheers. 🚙

That BA engine is a later one, you can tell by the triple filter OCVs, the first few months of gas engines had thin rods but you'd be pretty unlucky to find a surviving one. On the assembly line there were different heads for LPG, I was told by one of the engineers that they had different exhaust valves, whether or not they were the same as turbo I never checked. If the heads were the same as standard they wouldn't have bothered making sure only a different "gas" head was fitted.

That is correct. I worked at a Ford dealer and there was a recall on the some gas motors because they came from the factory with the wrong head (n/a one). The recall was to remove the old head and replace it with a gas head. Difference being the gas head was rated for more heat because gas burns hotter than petrol.... At least that's what I was told.

The pentite recommended oil was synthetic it destroyed the seal after a month oil everywhere under my once spotless ba xr6 turbo ute. I am now very wary of using synthetic oil in older cars a pinion seal is the same type of seal as a front and rear seal and if you use synthetic oil with a seal that was never made for it it destroys them.

@@maxgood42 They would be lighter for slightly better throttle response due to a slightly lighter spinning mass. They would not gain you better power and you run the risk of bending one or two if you have a backfire. That's why Ford fitted stronger rods in the first place. If you want better power (and probably better economy) a less restrictive exhaust system and a set of extractors is far less messing about. a K&N or BMC re usable air filter and a Territory duct may help too.

@@maxgood42 I have a dual fuel BA. I fitted it with the Egas throttle body. Yeah it's a restriction but it was a massive improvement over the mixer ring that was silasticed into the duct. With it's slightly higher compression and the vapour injection it should run better on LPG and on Petrol (probably 95 octane) than it ever has.

Thanks for the upload & info. Great to see a guy in his shed giving it a go himself 👍 Edit: what's a set of these green top rods usually cost? I've got a bf mk2 Fairmont Ghia with the barra 190 (skinny rods) in the shed doing nothing. Might swap the rods out one day. Maybe. Not a chance in hell I could pick up a green top anywhere near that cheap where I live

@CHANGE_YOUR_OIL_REGULARLY Thanks for watching mate! i had to remove these engines at the wrecking yard myself so i got them a bit cheaper, but they sell on marketplace and gumtree for around $500 - $750. If you're going through the effort of pulling down a motor to swap rods i'd honestly just get a set of stronger rods and better pistons, places like golebys and empire have them for a good price and will hold way more power!

@@EverythingFuzzY just curious won't be spending my money/time on the barra 6. My "toy" is the low km late 07 bf mk2 xr8 5.4 4v t56 in my profile picture. The Fairmont Ghia is secondary. Though its leather may end up in the xr8 🤷

@@change_your_oil_regularly4287 have another look, they’re cheaper atm. Least here in SA. After seeing this video too you know you’ll only need a short block to get what you need out of it.

The engines are fine and all . I think I spent half this video "windmilling" with the "horns up" "80's style.. Curious to see inside as I have a Barra in my commuter FG .

Good Vid , Nicely Done ! Another difference that iv'e noticed between my BF motor and the BA .Is the Sump , on my BF sump it has the mounting lugs for the Trans cooler . i think the BA is cooled through the radiator . I just got a 2003 , 220 Kl'm BA to replace my 2006, 338899 Kl'm with head gasket gone , still ran great , not hot , just foamed up the rocker box , I just put a liter of coolant in it every day , so other than do the head (Which could be cracked ? So i was told ) Some pitting on the cams in the BF. so I just got the 220kl'm BA . On the Knock sensors My BF had 2 and the BA 1 will that be a problem ? Or just add the 2 to the BA motor ?

Nice video The later model fgx engine had a different head i bought some taxi pack heads a while back they raised the compression on the last model the porting is staggered combustion chamber is smaller i have pics of this as i have been porting them and have documented the head there is very little change in the other model gas engines i run stainless steel valves but if you check the exhaust valves in the gas block they are not magnetic so they are either sodium filled or inconel, sodium valves are what they use in the rb 25det i build these aswell So all is safe It seems if the cams are worn it goes back to the oil pump having low pressure The only ford cams available now are fgx cams 1 part number for all Have fun building those they are a great engine

I never knew Ford made an LPG version of the Barra engine. That's really cool. The green painted valve cover looks oddly good on the engine.

To maybe help on how you pointed out the bad camshaft wear particularly with the FG motor you took apart. It could of been due to oil starvation from the poor quality oil pump housing n the oil pump gears ford use. Also could be from someone changing the camshafts on it and mixing up the camshaft cages which are suppose to come off and back on in the same order. But it looked to be more than likely oil starvation

It's from the roller lifters work hardening the metal , only fix is to use steel cams then u move the ware to the roller, can't win. Will adventually ware

@@josephcowen9771 this is true also engines are kinda weird with some oils like it must be the casting or something because the quad V8s don't like full synthetic oils

Were are you located? I've got a BA EGAS and I did an SCT Flash tune and Change the Exhaust with Extractors. I literally got 10kw more. The Tuner said my motor wasn't getting enough LPG that was the main problem. I can't remember what he said about a new specific mixer would boost up the power and change the DOHC to a Kelford Cam. I've had this car many year's it literally never missed a beat. Extremely reliable as i have always Used Nulon 15-40 Diesel and Irridum spark plugs. Always up to date. It has 245,000km. Would it be worth changing the Cams and retuning? Not because i want serious gain's but i just love driving this comfortable car and it's just still sluggish. Worse before the SCT FLASH AND EXHAUST system What's your opinion?
