Lake Michigan's formation began 1.2 billion years ago when two tectonic plates moving in opposite directions left a giant scar-an event now known as the Midcontinent Rift. Less than 15,000 years ago, melting glaciers filled the giant basin, and Lake Michigan came to be.
Lake Superior has its origins in the North American Mid-Continent Rift of 1.1 to 1.2 billion years ago, which produced a huge plume of hot mantle where the present lake sits. The crust tore apart, leaving an arc-shaped scar stretching form Kansas through Minnesota, then down to Michigan. Lake Superior rests mostly on Precambrian rock at the southern edge of the Canadian shield, the largest exposure of such bedrock on the planet. Some of the world's oldest rocks, about 2.7 billion years of age, can be found on the Ontario shore of Lake Superior.
After doing the rock/fossils hunting comparisons of the two Lakes ( Lake Michigan & Lake Superior) that are a part of our Great Lakes, I can say they both have equal beautiful rocks and or fossils to be found. They both are great places to rock hunt. They both are amazing Lakes to be at. They both have something the other one doesn't have as far as rocks and fossils go. They both have ducks and geese in the water. They both produce large ice shoves in the winter. They both can have no waves or huge waves. They both attract rock hunters. They both have very cold water even in the summer. The both guarantee you will find something amazing. They simply are amazing. No one is better than the other ! Thanks for watching :)
