I kept going back and forth between the SM7b and WA-47 on multiple speakers and headphones ($6000+ of gear), and the differences are very minute. The WA-47 sounds a bit more full bodied and clean, but the SM7b is no slacker and sounds very competitive. I wouldn't recommend anyone with the SM7b to upgrade unless they had a lot of money to spare, especially if their musical career still hasn't taken off, since it's very expensive and is not a noticeable difference to average listeners after mixing and vocal processing take place.

Great comment! I agree with your comments completely. The Shure SM7B is definitely no slacker, I used it for 99% of my first 2 albums into a cheap tube preamp. It's a workhorse and a tough mic to beat in it's price range & quality. That being said, while working on sessions with both the 7B and the WA-47 the biggest difference I notice is that the 47 has a lively, real-life quality about it. While the 7B sounds stellar in it's own right, the pillowy bottom-end of the 47 wins me over. Granted I filmed this video over a year ago and have since done 50 or 60 more songs with the 47 as my primary vocal mic, and am far more comfortable with the 47 as I've ever been. I have to say that while I love and respect both mics that I personally 100% would choose the 47 over the 7B every day of the week if price was absolutely no object. That being said, if you're looking for the best vocal mic in the 300-500 CAD mark, Shure 7B is your best friend. If you have a few mics already in your locker, and maybe you want to add a true tube condenser to your collection, the WA-47 is a formidable option in comparison to many microphones that are double or triple the price. Cheers and happy music making, T.

The tambourine put it over-the-top! :D But seriously, great job with the song. A very Byrds-ish vibe to it if I do say so myself. Oh...and the WA-47 is a great all rounder. I have the WA-47jr which is a really great sounding mic as well. I use it on all kinds of sources.

I like the sm7 best, 57 too. The sm7 could use a little more top end in the mix but I like the tone.

In your vocal audio examples, the clear winner was the SM57, for your voice, just saying, for that particular song/phrase. I found the 47 attenuated in the high range and overall less intimate and I am Warm Audio fanboy as I own a few of them (not the 47 though).

This demo doesn't show the 47 in a good light beside the beta 57a and the 57...both designed purposely with an accentuated high end response and far from flat microphones. The 47 comes across puffy and muffled, comparatively. I have the WA47 as well and am ALWAYS rolling off some of the bottom end and boosting the high shelf a tad. Still, you can't beat the 47 for that round, very mixable sound. Also, interesting song you have there...it's like a song full of hooks from top to bottom. I actually bought it at iTunes. Just a couple of tips....Lead Guitar bridge is wild and amazing...but a little too hot and forward in the mix. And, all those vocal doubles are screaming to be scooped out in the mid range. Also don't Autotune all the voices at the exact same pitch. Nail one of them on key and drop the next one down 2 or 3 cents, third one raise 2 or 3 cents. Great job man. You're obviously really talented. Keep up the good work!

Precisely! I'll be making an update to this video with a 1-year review for exactly that reason, and I'm going to include a lot of what I've learned about this mic. All the mics in the video are tremendous for their own reasons, all of which could be used on record. Check out some of my other videos to see the 47 in true action, my most recent has an example of it is on vocals and drum room. Cheers, and happy music making - TC

Sm7b and even the shure mics sound pretty good on your voice. The Wa-47 doesnt sound anything like a real 47 and you wouldnt expect it too. To me on this dry comparison, the Wa47 just sounds like an OK mic with a sock put over it. A kind of dulled down tone sound compared to the clear Sm7b and shure mics. Maybe it sounds better in the mix, but for the money I think there are better mics than the WA47.

The winner was the Warm Audio 47.... Vocal clarity, warmth and depth go to the Condenser.... 2ndly, your recording really needs to be ramped up, compare your audio level to some of the other channels, the audio is weak and I really had to turn up the volume considerably to hear it comfortably.

There is way too much room sound on all these mics even when you are fairly close up on them to really assess any important sound differences between them. If you are recording in a space like this you might as well just go with the SM57 as it sounds just as good / bad as the WA47... maybe better actually. Oh and by the way there is nothing "large" about the element in an SM7b. It's quite similar to the Unidyne element in the SM57. The Shure website will confirm this.

Well I'll stick to my SM7b in which I can sing as loud as I want. I wasn't impressed by the warm audio next to the SM7. Thanks for the comparaison. Your song is great BTW.

Thank you for your kind words! Every mic choice is subjective, so you aren't wrong at all :) Although, I do have to say when you push that preamp tube in the mic, it has a boldness and a slight breakup that the 7B can't quite compare to. Cheers and happy music making, T!

what are your thoughts about the wa47jr vs sm7b? In Australia the jr is about 150 cheaper
@TaylorCaspersenMusic
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's similarly priced here in Canada too. After hearing the Warm 47 and the Jr side by side, I preferred the warmth of the full-fat tube 47 sound. Comparatively, while they both sound really great, no complaints about either - I went with the tube variety specifically for it's warmth and character. I have a friend that actually got the WA-87 to go into his Avalon VT-737SP tube pre-amp, and they said the texture of the sounds were quite similar. Realistically, I think you could achieve a similar warmth with the WA-47 Jr and a tube pre-amp (or a software modeled tube preamp). Bottom line is to use your ears: if it sounds good, it is good. Cheers and happy music making!

Yeah I'm not so sure this really showed the mics in their best / accurate light. I have all the mics you have and for the 57 to sound the warmest in the bunch isn't right. The WA47 probably should have it's tube pushed more with the preamp to get it's true tone heard. Nice music man keep it up

I am sorry but the audio output of this video is so poor .. can barely make out any sound difference! You using any preamps?! Compared to this video which sounds good on the same youtube platform, with the exact same mic! kzitem.info/news/bejne/1ZifqGx4pYabqWU I wonder why some recordings are so poor .. are you guys pulling the chain on us?!

Thanks for your comment and feedback! I didn't use any mastering compression on the tracks presented, which in retrospect I definitely should have made them louder than they are, but this is close to the input volume of the mic into your interface. I have been considering a follow up video on this, stay tuned. Cheers, and happy music making!
