Muslims rely on the Quran and Hadith as the primary sources of Islamic law. Dr. Shabir Ally compares the Quran and Hadith in terms of authenticity and preservation. He says that very early on, in the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there was an emphasis on preserving the Quran, with people memorizing and writing it, and it was compiled into a book a couple of years after the Prophet's death. The Hadith was compiled later and was subject to the whims and interests of narrators, despite the scrutiny and care that scholars exercised in order to differentiate between the genuine and the forged.
