I don’t mean to be a stickler for scientific protocol; but the fact that you used the same fork between samples already nullifies the results as yeast strains will carry between jars…

Yeah I did consider that and mention it in the video, but from what I could find, the reproduction rate of a small sample carried across would not have affected the entire results to a major degree - only a minor variation in ferment times. Nonetheless it turns out I left it for too long anyway, so no harm no foul 😅

That is interesting that the Lowan bakers Yeast can ferment @ 14%, I always use this brand for my bread making and have used it to ferment fruit juice as in like ALDI apple juice and it works well.

Hey that's awesome to hear. Yeah I've had a lot of luck with Lowan. I just prepared another ferment that I'll pitch it in to tomorrow, and I think I've found that the second run of the yeast ferments better. Eg dump 100g into your 23L or so, do the usual, then save the yeast from this (many YT video's but I recommend "Still It"), and the next ferment is faster and higher %. Might need some DAP or similar to get the yeast started though - even some tomato paste... I've heard.

@@platima I thought it would be interesting to try but this time of year my house is way to cold, unless i had a heater on the base and one on the side. would be great temps if I was making a true lager beer, as it can get down to 5.C in the house hehe, old house and North East Victoria. thanks for the fast reply.

@@steviebboy69 hah yeah same here. I've found the cheapo pet-bed-headers are pretty good - 12V, draws a bit of current, but safe of you find one with N-tick. 5C about same here mate. Oh actually anything that has high thermal mass works well, so if you've got one brick wall that gets a fair bit of sun, then right next to that wall will be way warmer as bricks hold a good amount of heat!

@@platima My house is an old weatherboard, the pet bed thing sounds good idea by the way. I do have a greenhouse and it gets up to 35.C in there during a sunny day, then that would be too hot. I normally dont brew anything in the cooler weather anyway, I have enough piss stashed away anyway hehe.

@@steviebboy69 Oh yeah weatherboard is rough - go pinch some bricks from a construction site haha. But 35C sounds perfect! Just nights are a problem then in a greenhouse. For when I germinate chilli seeds in winter which is VERY similar in temperature and chemical balances, I have an old 290W solar panel going to a cheapo PWM solar inverter and old car battery, then 12V eBay timer, hooked up to one of these bad boys: www.ebay.com.au/itm/153059154668 looks like you can get silicone ones for 3D printers now which are even better though so shop around. Hopefully that helps, but alfoil wrap or even just a big lid can too!

Could be an idea to if you want to test for speed to just use a party balloon and a rubber band initially. The volume of CO2 should make it very obvious visually (and thus also good for video) how agressively the fermentation starts up. Since its so easy, you can check more often and just take some picturee instead of fiddling with gravity readings for so many sample jars. The other test would be alcohol tolerance using "too much" sugar and just seeing how high they end up. I was a little surprised that even the bakers yeast could manage 14%. Thats not bad at all. Personally I suspect the "turbo" in the turbo product mainly comes from their packages containing much more yeast than most others. Kind of obvious that would speed it up a lot. If you want to go full economy you should look into how to harvest yeast. It's a bit fiddly and time consuming for most people to bother with - but theoretically you can just make as much as you want from a single dose package and make it last years.

Oh that is a great idea, cannot believe I did not think of that, thanks for the info! And yeah I think teh same with Turbo yeast. The amount you put in is huge, so with some recent batches I've been pitching half a tub of Lowan (100g). Seems to run damn well

@@platima Happy to help! :) Actually balloons work pretty good as a makeshift airlock also in a pinch. Just find the thinnest needle you have and poke a tiny hole when the balloon is still not stretched much. The CO2 will regulate itself though that small stretchy hole - while the positive pressure does not allow any contaminants to go inside. Not sure I'd choose to use one over a proper airlock considering how cheap they are - but they do give an excellent visual representation of pressure in experiments like these.

Fark I think I might have to do some real science here; with and without DAP/fermaid, with too much sugar, OG and FG measurements, and timed with baloons. Maybe a timelapse too. Added it to my list of 'shit to record one day' hah. Yeah I have been harvesting some yeasts and found 2nd and 3rd gen yeasts often perform VERY well! (saw I missed some of the topics in your first message) With bakers yeast I found 14% (anything over 9/10% really) takes longer, and you need more yeast. I think it's just roll of the genetic dice - some have much higher ABV tolerance so that ~2% or whatever percent of the little gift-givers carry on.

@@platima Just wanted to add - I would be interrested to see how far just DAP (inexpensive) and magnesium sulphate (ie. epsom salt without additives, very cheap) takes you in terms of yeast nutrients compared to much more expensive and complex micronutrients blends. I suspect it's qite far. Ive also heard that a single common B-vitamins complex supplement pill also helps a lot (not had the chance to test yet). Just some ideas for your brain to ferment on ;)
