@Leonhart_93

I do not think it needs to be quite as heavy as it is, but since it's made to follow the "american" design philosophy its weight is exaggerated. Thick metal grids and dense woods do give the feel of "luxury" but 100 grams shaved off by using lighter materials (and maybe just as tough) would make one hell of a lot of difference. And it's not necessarily sturdier like that either. I feel more relaxed after dropping a 250g plastic headphone than something over twice as heavy, but made of metal and wood.

To each his own, fortunately we have many options, even within the Audeze lineup. The lcd 2 closed back and classic are good options as well. Living in Arizona, I have concerns about extreme low humidity and wood construction. At $1199 for the creator package I prefer the all metal construction over plastic, but admit as an American I also like muscle cars.

Glad you referenced the 800s as accurate/analytical headphones. As a 30yr recording engineer I want to hear what I recorded reproduced as close as possible to the source.. To date the 800s has topped the list. Though interesting enough, sans real btm end, AKG 7XX is also fast, and open.. I'm not putting down "Warmer" hence "narrower" thumping party phones. My endgame combo after many years of wandering is Fostex TH900 and Senn HD800s. HD800s thru sound processor eq on 80% of music, they beg for little bit bass push. But they're too impressive for not to have. Fostex, I didn't like it much with stock pads, but with ZMF Ori pads, I wouldn't trade it for anything including Stax, Audeze, ZMF, etc.

Can't afford the HD 800s? Do what I did. Invest in the beleaguered HD 700, which has been in poor demand due to its annoying treble spike. Then employ an easy, non-destructive fix that reduces the treble spike without destroying their openness and clarity (credit KZitemr DMS). Take self-adhering surgical bandage, fold it into four layers about two inches square, cut a 3/4 inch hole in the center, and trim the corners to fit. Then slip these improvised and surprisingly specific "resonance filters" into the ear cups behind the liners, centering the hole on the center of the driver. And voila! A beautiful-sounding headphone that is spacious, dynamic, still staggeringly detailed, but now warmer and more balanced - nearly as good at the HD 800s, but for less than one third the price. Thank me later. Or better yet, thank DMS.

There was a guy there with a DNA Stratos (massive beast of an amp) and a bone stock pair of HD800's. I still remember, to this day, how incredible that sounded. That amp kept all the detail of the 800's but warmed them up so nicely. I sat there for like 25 minutes not even moving my head, I didn't want to disrupt the sound even a bit lol. Thanks for the interesting review. Out of the 4 headphones, I own the HD800S and Z1R. First of all, I’d been very interested to hear more about your views (? Listening) of sound quality of the Z1R, especially since the reviews are so insanely mixed. I personally like them, but many don’t. Second, I read up on the HD820 and most members of the German audiophile community do conclude that it does not match the HD800S in SQ, there seem to be some spikes in the midrange which change the overall profile. Without not knowing the other two headphones,, I personally think the HD800S and Z1R are a perfect open/closed combo, and are different in signature covering all tastes, analytical and smooth/relaxed.

@@dzemoski45 Most reviewers called it bass heavy, I find it perfect in balance, bass punchy but not overbearing. The mids are rather recessed. But for headphones in this price range, definitely give it a test listen (which I did NOT, still very happy).

I’m super late to comment here and for good reason, I hadn’t heard any of these until recently which is weird. For me it’s the XC for the win at least for where I am now...(kids, wife, etc.). IMO, Audeze finally got it closer to “correct FR”with the XC than on so many other of their LCD line. The entire LCD lineup to me is a disfunctional group of misfit toys. I always want to love them but I can’t for one reason or another. I’ve owned several Audeze headphones thinking I’m gonna get “the one” and I end up having to sell it. Their headphones still contend with unit variance which Audeze doesn’t like to talk about too much. The funny thing is that the newer LCD GX, a gaming headphone is actually tonally superior to practically every LCD headphone but you do lose some of the detail and punch due to having only a single sided magnet structure. However, you now start to see some but it because of its lighter weight but better FR. Back to the XC... Yes they are closed but they don’t feel like eq is a need right out of the box like most of not all other LCD headphones. This is a concern for me as I don’t enjoy needing to eq. The main drawback for many is the weight which is substantial. I’ve never liked the HD800. To me it’s just too niche in a world that’s already niche. However, the HD800 is a blast on tubes if you need to scratch that itch. The SONY is also a really fun headphone to listen to. However, it’s over-priced to me but so are most Audeze headphones. Anyway, I’m sure many folks would have different takes than mine but that’s what makes this hobby fun! Great overview Steve as always. 👍🏻

Interesting video. I bought the 820 on a whim, without doing any research about the competition. I previously only owned a set of HD600 and that's about it for audiophile headphones. I guess I'm happy with the purchase because they sound pretty similar, aside from the 820 having a slightly more detailed high end and more rich bass that extends lower into the low end. This works out for me because I love the sound of the HD600, and while I don't necessarily think the 820 is "better", it's nice to now have a closed back alternative that isolates better and doesn't flood the room with what I'm listening to. I definitely prefer completely neutral and "analytical" sound as you say over character, because for one I make my own music so I need to be able to hear any problems with the mix, and I also find headphones with more color and character to cause more listening fatigue. The Audeze does sound fun to have just for occasional thrills though. And the 800S seems like the way to go if you want "open" with the utmost clarity and neutral sound, but for me it seems hard to justify the price difference between the 600 or 650... although I haven't heard the 800S themselves so maybe the difference is significant enough. The price difference between those and the 820 is even greater, but at least you get to isolate sound at the same time so they can serve a different purpose.

Looking at the online available frequency response graphs I question headphone reviews comparing sound quality. The individual frequency response curves vary so much that all sound quality descriptions can only be taken as "Purely" subjective and reviewer personal preference based. I haven't seen any headphone reviews where all headphones were calibrated for +/- 1 db of flat. So, any opinion is a purely subjective indication of personal preferences and would be invalid for any kind of neutral and unbiased recommendation.

Steve, it is not fair to the Audeze. You should have pitted its bigger brother (LCD-MX4 or LCD-3) against its German and Japanese counterparts since the LCD-MX4 costs about the same as the Sennheiser and the Sony. I think the Audeze LCD-MX4 is a better headset.

Why do people like open back headphones ? Headphones by nature are meant for private listening. What is the point of open back headphones ? If the person next to you can clearly hear music from the open back headphones, might as well ditch them and invest in a good set of speakers.

@SteveGuttenbergAudiophiliac

@Leonhart_93
6 жыл бұрын
I don't really get why you mention the M50x when you talk about midrange, when those are known as runner up to THE V-shaped crown. On the other hand most headphones from Sennheiser like HD 600 or even the lower tiers from the 5xx line, all have pretty much perfect midrage in line with everything else and some have it even emphasized (A-shaped).

I have the M50x and enjoy them but I prefer the 800s by a large margin. Also the Andromedas midrange is crazy good and there is no scenario that I’d use the M50x if I have a pair of Andromedas around. For the price though the M50x and M40x are great cans but I’d rather spend a little more and get the HD6XX

When people, who probably own the headphones they’re referring to, claim them to ‘be the best’ and something else is “just not as good, sorry” that they maybe haven’t even heard, or maybe u have...but u sound ridiculous. This stuff is so subjective, and what I love, u may hate, and vice versa. Comfort for me is hellish ear pain for you. It’s like saying ‘blue is the best color ever. U like orange? It sucks, sorry to inform you”. I don’t agree with Steve all the time, but he’s smart enough to say “in my opinion” quite often.
