Hi! Our baby has been on hypoallergenic formula since 3 months as recommended by our doctor but simply going off of symptoms (GERD, bottle refusal, mucous in poo, etc). The formula has helped all of the symptoms except for gas which I believe comes from the probiotics in the powder. However, at our last appointment, since it wasn’t a “truly” diagnosed allergy our doctor advised us to try and re-introduce a regular formula. He hasn’t really mentioned which he would recommend and I’m driving myself crazy over it. Anything you would recommend to try to transition?

You aren't alone in your personal opinion. Pediatricians for a fact jump to alimentum and nutramigen as if they get a kick back from it. It happened with my eldest 12 yrs ago and sadly it hasn't changed with my 2 month old. Tuned in to this video to get a better understanding of amino acid formulas bc that is the newest edition to the formula roller coaster my baby has been on since birth. Is 6 in 8 weeks too many?? Smh

Hi, I would like to see an informational video and comparison of elemental formulas. The major ones are neocate (infant and syneo), elecare, puramino and alfamino. Our baby could not tolerate the broken down proteins in alimentum and we are on neocate as per pediatric GI. Doing very well.

My doctor put my LO on a hypoallergenic formula but the only "test" was discovering blood in his stool. My question is what test should I ask for and if my baby does not have a dairy allergy but is just sensitive should I try to introduce a partially hydrolyzed formula? Should I mix the hypoallergenic with a partially hydrolyzed formula and what age should I do this. I'm thinking my LO (born at 36 weeks) might just be lactose intolerant. He's doing fine on the Alimentum but if I could get him to a more affordable formula that would be great. Plus I'm wondering if my doctor just jumped the gun and we never experimented with a partially hydrolyzed or lower lactose formula.

Hi Aliza, That's a hard situation! Unfortunately, there's not a single test that would give you a perfect answer about a potential allergy. I suggest making an appointment with your doctor and comparing your possible options. Explain your intuition, and ask about other options you may consider experimenting with. I suggest making an appointment because then your doctor will have time blocked off for you whereas they can be rushed on the phone with other obligations.

I have the same exact issue with my 3.5mos son. He's also born at 36weeks and he gets rash all over his face and body. Ive had 5 formula changes. Our latest is the nutramigen, he is on it for 3 days already... His rash has subsided on the face, not completely but it got better.

Which formula options can we choose from. Ele*** has soy, pura*** has soy. neo*** and alfa*** are they good? Thanks in advance.

My breastfed baby is very sensitive to formula. We've tried Similac Pro-Advance and Gerber Pro-Gentle. Baby pukes both up. We are currently use soy formula. Baby is able to keep it down but appears to be a bit constipated and uncomfortable...and, to be honest, I'm not a huge fan of soy. The doctor said we could also try Alimentum or Nutamigen if the soy didnt work. Baby has NOT best tested for a milk allergy. Should I try a different milk-based formula. Maybe Similac Pro-Total?

Just curious what did you end up trying in what worked we tried gentle Gerber good start gentle pro not the soothe or the gentle pro actually the good start gentle pro and mixing that with a little bit of the extensive HA worked for us .I don’t think any formula when your baby is used to being breast-fed tolerates formula until they get about three to 4months of age.. I have two kids and that’s just been my experience.

I just started my little one on Alimentum. He has not been diagnosed with an allergy. He has only been on the formula for a few days. I'm wondering if trying a partially hydrolyzed formula would be too big a switch on his system at this point?
@BabyFormulaExpert
5 жыл бұрын
Hi Jourdan. If he can handle a partially hydrolyzed formula, I do think that is preferable over a fully hydrolyzed choice. Just be sure to do the transition slowly over 7-10 days. This way his body has time to adjust to digesting bigger proteins slowly.

Greetings @BabyFormulaExpert , thank you so much for all of your information here! I will definitely watch more of your content! I'm sorry to be a pain, but why would you recommend the partially hydrolyzed formulas over fully (in babies thar can tolerate of course)? I ask because my reflux, 2 month old is doing Enfamil Gentleease and we are very close to trying the Alimentum because he is not improving and because "what could be the harm" essentially. We are desperate for any help and I'm ignorant to why it wouldn't be recommended to try. He hasn't been tested for allergies because he doesn't have bloodystools and is gaining weight appropriately. Are there any negative reasons not to simply start the Alimentum?

Casen sp? Is cow derived
@BabyFormulaExpert

Both whey and casein in these formulas are originally cows milk derived. But each are chopped up (hydrolyzed) so small in hypoallergenic formulas that they are safe for kiddos with cow milk allergies.

Dana is Correct: Neocate, Elecare, and PurAmino are amino-acid based formulas. I don't talk about these on purpose since they are only for really sick babies with significant health complications. You should only be feeding one of these under the care of a pediatrician and gastroenterologist (at minimum). If you're little one needs one of these, I am so sorry that I can't be of more help.

Hi I am curious what in the formula causes constipation vs diarrhea. When my daughter was on nutramigen she pooped like 5 times a day diarrhea. She is currently on powder alimentum. When I tried to switch to liquid alimentum it made her very painfully constipated.

@@vyreakt8187 my daughter alternated between alimentum and nutramigen until she was 11 months old then I just stopped formula altogether. She’s 2 now but it was such a difference from her crying all the time as an infant to being a mostly happy toddler. Her constipation also cleared up on its own. Never did figure out what was in the formula that caused her problems

Hi Dr. our son was admitted to the hospital for pulmonary hypertension and failure to thrive. He was on Holle goats milk formula, which he loved, but they switched him to alimentum. How do the two compare to each other? Does alimentum help to increase weight better than holle?
@ssssshley
5 жыл бұрын
Charley The Red Dobie Hi I’m not a doctor, but I hope this can help. Alimentum is a Hypoallergenic Formula which means the milk protein has been broken down or predigested so the body will not react badly or not as badly compared to intact (not broken down) milk protein. Holle Goat Milk Formula is not cows milk based and is proven to be easier to digest. However the protein are still intact. Maybe your baby has Milk Protein Allergy, that’s why they gave you Alimentum. Sometimes doctor will give you Hypoallergenic formula to get the previous formula out of he baby’s system. Then you and your doctor can figure out the next move.

Hi Dr. Young, our son has had issues with just about every formula we've tried, including the "partially hydrolyzed" formulas like Similac Sensitive and Gerber Soothe. He's had eczema on his entire body from about 3.5 months +, becomes constipated very easily, and has suffered from acid reflux since he was a newborn. My husband and I have looked into trying a hypoallergenic formula but are unsure if he sounds like a good candidate? Our pediatrician has pretty much told us to give our son prune juice for the constipation, hydrocortisone cream from his eczema, and has felt that he should not be on ranitidine as he assumes he'll "outgrow" the acid reflux. All of these suggestions are great and dandy but they never really get to the route of the issues. What's your opinion? Should we try one of the hypoallergenic formulas and see if it helps?

Verity DeLong Hi love. I watch Hausofcolour’s videos and she had to wean her baby from breastmilk so she gave him formula. She tried American formulas at first but baby was just projectile vomiting and broke out in really bad eczema and rashes. So she went the European Formula route which is Super Organic. She tried HiPP Combiotik and baby didn’t react as bad but still vomited. Then she tried the Hipp HA version because she suspected a Cows milk protein allergy. And her baby did so well with Hipp HA. The eczema went away so fast and no vomiting
