Thank You! It was very informative and helpful for me - I just started to learn to use scopes and I own HP54600B scope. Just recently I got another - fully analog Tektronix 2445A and, used to HP display I thought it was broken at low frequencies :D Now I know It works just as it should so I'm relieved :)

Good job at pointing out some of the differences. I don't think the advantages of the digital scope are as marked as you say they are in the example from about 8:20 to 13:15 (burst of three cycles at low frequency). You can move the display of the wave form around on the analog scope, which you actually did at about 13:10 by adjusting the trigger. I also wonder if you could reduce the flicker with some adjustments. About measurements, I'm thinking that the digital scope may not have an advantage in accuracy if you're using the cursors. Positioning the cursors is not exact, so there's inaccuracy there. On the other hand, it's nice to have a digital readout rather than having to count squares on the grid. To me the big advantages of digital are the abilities to store a waveform (send it to computer, print it out, etc.) and to see transient events. But I'm new to this and I've got a lot to learn!

Very good video, except for one inaccuracy: the comments about graticule measurements/cursors weren’t entirely correct. Higher end analog scopes have cursors just like on your DSO. And although reading measurements from a graticule can be time consuming, on a properly calibrated analog scope, the measurements will be just as accurate in nearly all cases as a DSO with automatic measurements.

DSOs are definitely good for transients. Also, nothing is "projected" on the screen. The CRT emits a beam of electrons that hit the phosphor coating on the inside of the tube "screen" and causes the phosphorous to release energy in the form of light.

The bottom scope has the intensity turned up higher. Jacob could have turned up the intensity on the top one to match but chose not to. This is not a real difference between these two scopes.

are there extra8/addon/separate memory modules for an analog osciloscope? like a kind of equipment to add into the dialling between the generator and the scope it self so that it could store the signal and cover the lack of memory on behalf of the analog osciloscope?

Jason Lome if you want to keep it under 200 go with a used tektronix. You won't find a good modern scope for less than 400 I would argue the rigol ds1054z is the best modern budget scope coming in at 400. Start with a used tek. They are great ways to learn the scope before moving to a modern scope.

My confusion still is how a digital scope is useless vs an analog scope when watching audio waveforms or x/y mode. The sample rate on a digital scope is too slow. And if that’s the case isn’t a digital scope losing data since it can’t keep up? That’s where I’m still confused. The sample rate vs the bandwidth I suppose.

the dude in the video uses a super early digital scope. modern ones are NOTHING like the one shown here. Sample rates now go into the Double digit GIGASAMPLES range on the higher end ones.

Nice video, but I don’t really think it is helpful for someone looking to buy an oscilloscope today, reason being that the example you are using as a “digital” oscilloscope is really an antique, late 1980’s and is one of the very earliest generation of DSO’s ever made. Any more recent digital scope is going to look and behave vastly differently. You mentioned the replacement of the Cathode Ray Tube with an LCD, but there is a more important difference in the user interface: On modern scopes there are no numbers or cursors or absolute positions on any of the knobs. The mechanical knobs have been replaced by encoding wheels, and all values are read off the screen itself. That change was easy for me when I transitioned to digital scopes 20 years ago, but today when I’m faced with an analog machine I’m a bit thrown off - though that could just be because I’m 20 years older!
