I went to the range today and used the chop stick drill to incorporate more right bend in my swing. The results were mind boggling (good)! I’ve had a love hate relationship with miy driver for years but today I was actually understanding my swing with this club. I hit several drives right down my target line! … and it felt great. You are one of the best instructors out there, Giles. I’ll be watching this video over and over to incorporate. Many suggestions in my swing as possible. Next up if the alignment stick across my toes and upward. I’m hoping to improve my carry distance (about 210 with ~240 total). Any other of your videos on improving distance would be greatly appreciated. Again, many thanks!!!

Thanks Gill for this comprehensive instruction. I have one question though which always troubles me. In the setup you mention to align the ball with the armpit since this will be the lowest point of the arc. Well, this would be true in case we are only swinging with the lead arm. When we are using the correct grip with both hands, then usually it is said that the body’s reference point for lowest point of the arc is not the armpit but the sternum, which makes absolutely sense if one looks at the triangle and which is also commonly explained for iron shots and setup. Now how come, in the driver setup with both hands has the armpit as the lowest point. In addition, if during the swing I turn my lead shoulder up and always I will move this lowest point significantly higher as before. So how does this all goes together? Thanks for the great stuff….Marc
@Gilesgillgolf
Жыл бұрын
The lead side controls the low point as it is rotating open in the downswing which drags the low point forwards, hence under lead armpit as our guide
@Gilesgillgolf
Жыл бұрын
Plus the hands aren’t the same height on the club which will also mean the low point can’t be in the middle of the sternum as the should get tilted (regardless of any rotation)

Just found your channel and found this driver video very useful. I have a question regarding setup. I have found it helps me to place my driver on the ground 6 inches behind the ball at setup i.e. my intended low point. I also position the clubhead slightly towards the toe as this then brings the centre towards the ball at impact because of the elevation. Addressing 6 inches away from the ball also helps me to get optimum dynamic loft at impact and a positive AA without delibetately trying to hit up on the ball. I also find it easier to keep my body/arms square to slightly closed this way. I would appreciate your comments on my setup as it a little different from your video.
@Gilesgillgolf
Жыл бұрын
Yeah for sure it’s a little against the grain but plenty of players do it and it does help preset the low point behind the ball more. As long as you understand why you’re doing it and it works then that’s all that matters

Hands down one of the best videos detailing the driver from start to finish. One follow-up question I have is around grip pressure. On a scale from 1-10, I tend to start at address with what I feel is a 3 and as I start down, I feel like my grip pressure ramps up a 10. Is there a good drill to maintain a good grip pressure thru-out the driver swing? What is a good grip pressure?

Crazy good breakdown Giles! Just a couple of questions. Where should hands be at impact? Should they be inline with the clubhead/very neutral? Or should i be almost "flicking" my wrists at impact? Will that create more speed? If you know what i mean
@Gilesgillgolf
10 ай бұрын
No flicking. The wrists release after shaft parallel in the downswing (by release I mean they golf from left arm and the club having angle back to a position where the left arm and club are in one straight line around the lead ankle). This means at impact you will have you hands ahead slightly meaning their is shaft lean

Finally found a YT video that explains all aspects of how to hit driver. Will probably watch these half a dozen times to Make sure I understand and execute via the drills, on how to hit the one club I have trouble with. Superb content.

Good stuff...tried a few things with driver and yes I can see where this will make a big difference. There is a lot here so I'm piecing it together and starting to get the right feels.
