Last year when my potted mum starting looking done, late October, I did nothing to it and put it in the garage. When spring came, I noticed a bit of green so took out, cut it back, watered good and set it out where it would get plenty of sun. It is so beautiful this year. I live in central Iowa, zone 5.

Don’t know your location but mums are pretty hardy as plants, here in Williamsburg, VA. Belgium mums are the only reliably perennial mums I know, but regular mums have come back for me too. So, pot or ground, after they bloom, you can leave the stalks until spring or cut them off, right then in the fall. Then, in the spring, look for a tiny bit of green at the base. That means the plant is alive. Cut off the dead parts if you didn’t do this after they died the previous year, and add a bit of good soil to the base. I don’t put them in pots, but I would imagine it is the same process, although the soil might be a bit tired. If you see some of those green sprigs, don’t hesitate to dig them up, or take them out of the pot, and either replant them, or put them in the ground. These can be little pieces, really, but these things grow into big plants. You can move these little pieces outside, and replant them in a more pleasing arrangement, if they have grown where you don’t want them. They don’t look it, but those small pieces have a lot of life in them and will grow into gorgeous plants. My next must do, I learned the hard way. When they come back, they will look pretty good, with buds on them by June or so. But, in order for them to have sturdy stems in the autumn, and not fall over from the weight of the blooms, they must be cut back. Safe to do this any time, but before about July 4. If you cut them back after, you may not give them time to set new blooms. So cut them back by at least a third to a half. This is hard for me to do, because they look so good! But, the effect in the fall will be well worth it. As they age, three or four years old, they tend to grow roots outward, away from the original plant. My solution is to dig the whole thing up in the spring, reassemble the small pieces in my own pattern and cover them with new soil. And, I have even replanted those small pieces in new areas and gotten completely new and lovely plants. When I buy mums now, and I don’t have to buy many, I treat them as perennials, even if they are in pots on my steps. I know I will eventually be putting them in the ground. Not having to buy new mums and then just throw them away is a joy.

This is so timely. I've been deadheading my mums this year and it has really helped. I had 6 mums that came back from last year (they were in the ground...zone 7b) and they have been really slow to bloom. I used granular fertilizer, but probably need to give them some liquid fertilizer. Oh...and I also saw some mums at my local Lowe's clearance section. I probably need to go back and get some.
@TheAdhdGardener

Yep granular fertilizer helps for long term for regular feeding but it's generally not really enough for the amount of blooms we want so we go to liquid too😉🌻

I'm in zone 7b , I actually brought some of my mums indoors, after the blooms finished around November. I cut them back and now I have basketball shaped mum bushes " she said" lol... I do have grow lights on them... also peppers and what not. I have 3 acres, so this spring I'll build a greenhouse. I just trimmed the mums down to the base leaving about 5 or six branches above the soil at like two inches, that way all the nodes sprouted and I didn't have to trim tops to get that round shape.

I've just given them a bigger pot, fresh soil as the old stuff was completely soaked and was a mess of roots, and just deadhead them. I'm going to be getting some liquid fertilizer as that should help them out and if they survive, I'm separating them completely from one another

Omg I’m so glad I found you! I am also ADHD off the Richter scale 😂 (yes, diagnosed, medicated, in therapy lol). I just moved into a house from an apartment and not only did the previous owners do a lot of landscaping but I also go freakin wild in the garden stores buying all the flowers. (Recently mums for the same reason… so sad for summer and beautiful flowers to leave.) However, the first 2 I purchased are giving me heck. The yellow flowers started turning pink/purple and plant app I downloaded (and paid for bc I need that much help lol) said I was overwatering. I cut back, same thing still happening. 🥴 Unless I missed it in the video (possible seeing as how I’m doing laundry at the same time as listening), I didn’t hear about watering. I’m trying to find the balance plus what to do when I’m out of town coming up next week. Help! (Side note - I live in Illinois. I also have a greenhouse from previous owners… no idea how to use that thing but pumped to hear that my mums have potential to stick around bc I totally thought they were a one season gig!)

We’re getting some early 35F night temps coming up, I’ve always had good luck with my mums continuing to thrive through cold crisp nights, but I’m worried about a frost/freeze coming this soon. October only just began, I need these babies through Halloween. Usually they don’t start showing signs of distress (even the cheap small potted ones) until late November, even into December depending on temps and conditions. For whatever reason though this year I’m feeling concerned. Zone 5 here. Most of mine are hardy and in the ground, currently in full glorious bloom.

I'm in zone 4b and took a leap of faith a couple years ago with a mum I bought from ghe store. It had 3 different colors in the pot, but they all came back as 1 color. I leave them alone at the end of the season but mulch them heavily with leaves then prune them way back in the spring when I start to see new growth. I just planted 4 more a couple weeks ago not paying attention to the fact that they are floral mums. I doubt those will survive our winter. I also just discovered Belgium mums. But think it may be too cold to plant it so I'll have to over-winter it in the house which I've never done. (Hope I done kill it!)
