Full guide for all the steps needed to replace your upper and lower control arms on the BMW e90. This is a 2007 but should apply to all 3-series from 2007 to 2013 plus many other BMWs (see below).
The uppers are sometimes called thrust arms or thrust struts. When the bushings or ball joints wear out you get vibration in the front suspension and steering. Also things feel more sloppy and less precise. This is a great maintenance item for any car over about 80K miles. It will really bring it back into factory fresh condition.
The dealer will typically charge more than $1200-1500 for this (I was quoted about $1000 for just the upper arms). But you can do it for about $250 in parts and 1-2 hours.
A good impact gun will make this job SUPER easy but hand tools are fine.
You'll need only:
18mm sockets and closed end wrenches (bushing side bolts)
24mm socket (ball joint lock nut)
8mm socket (undertray bolts)
jack and jack stands
maybe some ramps or blocks for final torque down (video shows what I mean)
OE Part Numbers for the arms:
31126769797, 31126769798, 31126770849, 31126770850

Some of these kits DO NOT come with lock nuts -- you'll need to replace them, they are single use. If you need it separately it's this number: 33306787062. I got it from the dealer.
