I simply happened on to your site by chance. I too have a homebuilt sawmill and it has several; similarities' to yours. I have an 18 hp gas engine, but use wheelchair motors for the lift and feed. I started mine 3 years ago and just 2 weeks ago, I installed a electric solenoid for my choke. I enjoyed watching your video.

Greetings from Ontario, Sounds like you have put some great thought into the design of your mill. What a great idea to use the dc motors off of a wheel chair, and installing a solenoid to operate the choke is brilliant. I have seen a mill with electric head lift and travel, it was an amazing setup. Our mill is simple gravity feed (I set the bed of the mill up on an inclive from front to rear) and a use a hand crank system for raising and lowering the saw head. Your ideas and use of the motors sound fantastic. I would love to see some pics of your mill or even a video if that would be possible. My email can be found on my youtube home page. Thanks so much for reaching out and for your encouraging words. I am really glad you happened across our channel. All the best and happy sawing!!

Hello Mac, I could not agree with you more, since I was a young boy I have been enthralled with sawmills, even more than cowboys! LOL!!! I always enjoy sawing some lumber, there is something so very special about the smell of fresh sawdust. Years ago a neighbour had an old mill powered by a "vintage" IHC tractor on steel. It was always so much fun to take logs there and see him saw. He often reminded us, his wife was his best helper. One time he sawed some Elm sheeting for a barn roof, the fellow came in and complained about the weight of the Elm planks and muttered about how as he going to lift them up on the roof. So the story went, the sawyer said" you'll have to ask my wife she loaded them on the wagon". Hope you are doing well Mac, it is always great to hear from you.

Thanks so much Mark, it continues to serve us well. Sawing lumber is one of my favourite tasks. I am sure appreciating using the choke cable. I cannot believe it took me over 20 years to install it... LOL As ways, thanks for your encouraging comments. All the best!

Hey Paul! Great old sawmill. Great idea with the cable. What's the smaller motor for? You got some nice boards buddy! Take care

Hello Neighbour, I should have installed that choke cable many years ago... I did what my father often warned me about, I put off what I should 0:02 have done for another day. I sure didn't plan on that day being 20 some years later!! LOL!! I positu8n the sawmill so it is in an incline from front to rear. This gives gravity feed for the cutting process. The small motor is used to return the cutting head back once the cut has been made. It makes life a little easier for us old fellows. Thanks for reaching out, it is always great to hear from you!

Greetings from Ontario, thanks so much for your comments. We are donating the lumber and some hardwood as well to a local High School for their Tech. Shop Program. We are fortunate to be able to support their program and have for years. They build some amazing projects. All the best, hope your are having a good winter.

Do you use a cutting fluid while sawing? Some do some don't. Any reasons for either practice? I've heard it's the pitch that causes some blade issues. Ps. I'm in Ontario myself for a week or so myself. Helping my son on a renovation project on a big church building in Brampton.

We use windshield washer fluid in the winter and summer. If sawing a lot of Pine I will sometimes add Pine-sol to help with pitch build up on the blade, wheel belts, and guides. I installed a blade lube tank and application system when I built the mill; from research and also from having an old fellow saw lumber for us on our farm. I added two valves: one a simple ball valve (open and close) and a metering valve so I could adjust the flow. I even use blade lube when sawing hardwood (although quite sparingly). You sure get around Buddy! It is great to hear you are in Ontario helping your son with the church renovations. He is no doubt cut from the same family cloth and a very talented make it happen kind of fellow. If timing were a little different it would have been good to get together (as long as traffic is good, we live about two and a half hours from the area you are in) for a meal and a visit. Unfortunately we are heading across to the old country (this morning) for a visit with family. Hope you have a great visit with your son and the renovations go well.
