The thing that fucks me up about Malos is that he spent most of his life thinking that he couldn't change, that he was just programmed to be a villain, unaware of the fact that he DID change. Jin changed him. Malos came to legitimately care about Jin's tragedy and suffering, but he used his own role in that tragedy as another excuse to believe that he just is who he is. He mistakenly believed that Jin craved the same destruction and oblivion that he did, and he in turn made Jin believe that. Like a toxic feedback loop between him, Amalthus, and Jin. But Jin never wanted any of that. All he wanted was someone to connect with. When the Architect assured Malos that he did have free will the whole time, Malos didn't change his ways. He doubled down, because he felt like he could never come back from the path he chose. When Malos is talking about Rex maybe forgiving Jin, Malos asks, "And how many people died because of it? You'd forgive him just like that?" I think Malos is asking if he too could be forgiven. Rex rightfully answers that it's not that easy, but making the effort is the best we can do.

The ending is not making people cry for nothing, in a result, Pneuma did die in the end. When she is leaving and watching Rex escape, she knew she is going to die there, that's why she said a long sentence of being grateful for Rex's gift of light to her life. And she actually doesn't know if she can respawn with memory stored in the core crystal. This is actually her first time to return to the crystal ever as an Aegis (Remember that Aegis will not automatically return to crystal when their driver dies, which means they can remain in blade form forever as long as the crystal is there.) But the point is, either respawn with or without memory, that's not the same "self" she was. (you can see the respawned Pyra/Mythra as a version 2 of the original self) So what makes this ending so good and beautiful is that they showed a true death and a true reunion (with memory) together in one character. Above are the 2 points of view from the setting logic and the character's feelings. They all make best sense in this way of ending. In terms of the purpose/motivation from the Aegis in the end. She could actually choose whether to come back or not. It is a crossroad decision to her. In chapter 3 when people discussing about blades losing memories, but Pyra truely thought that being able to forget is a good thing. And we all see how she has changed in late chapters that she thinks she might be able to live instead of to die (Ch8~9 the question Nia asked about living forever). But it's until the last moment she truly has to decide. So the come back ending also gives a confirmation to that hesitation depicted in the early game. It also means that she finally finds her purpose (which Malos doesn't), to live on in this world. This way it will show even more about this character and makes her more perfect than she just decide to die. (So this is a very important aspect to present the purpose/motivation of her from this ending) From reaching Elysium (space station) to die , to reaching Elysium(real one) to live This is a very beautiful meaning that it can't be told if they just die/sacrifice there. So I think it's a really well-planned best ending in every aspect to reach an outstanding ending of all games.

4:55:20 I personally interpret the ending as the Architect’s last gift towards humanity, he both removes the cloud sea and gets the titans to merge creating Elysium, but also allows Pyra/Mythra to be brought back and to save the people they cared about. This is the architect’s way to atone for his sins, almost like Jesus, since he embodies the mercy and regret of Klaus(compared to how Zanza represents his envious and greedy side) after taking on the experiment that fucked up the world and the creation of the aegises Pyra/Mythra didn’t know they were going to come back, they in fact thought that was it, after hating living for thousands of years they admit to it having been worth it just for the time they spend with Rex, they found a meaning in life, and thanks to the Klaus’s gift , they got to settle down and live a peaceful life

@@komakuga4731 though it works better in my opinion that they did come back. Throughout the whole game they wanted to die because they feared their own power, and didn't want to hurt anyone else. But through rex and their travels with him they learned to love life and want to live, it would've been kinda dumb to have them just die.

Here's the breakdown of why the aegis girls could return during the ending, arguably with memory fully intact. It's foreshadowed pretty heavily throughout the story, but maybe has execution problem, like a lot of things in xc2: - Chapter 2: through dialogues and the fight with Dughall we know that blades are being of energy and are immortal unless their driver die or their core got damaged. PS: Dughall is actually a pretty important villain imo, but many people overlook him. - Chapter 7: here lie the problem, the game lore dump players pretty heavily during this chapter, and thus many got overwhelmed. But the notable details are: aegis can survive with a damaged core and even without a core for a while. Even the aegies themselves don't have all the information about how they work and what they could do. They can steal data from each other, and can repair themselves with suffice aegis data. e.g. Malos repair his core with Pyra data, and the girls could very well have utilised the third blade data stored in Rex's part of the core to repair themselves using the same method (explaining why the third blade crumble to dust then suddenly Rex know what needed to be done). The convo during chapter 7 when Rex persuade them to not give up on life happen inside the X shaped core on his chest. I believe there are no ghosts in xc2, every encounters with "spirits" are actually manifestation of data brought forth by the processor. - Chapter 9: we know how the blade system work, they lose their memory because those are sent as data to the Processors to help with the restoration progress. Without the Conduit and Klaus, Alvis pretty much worlds apart, and Malos death, there is nowhere for the data of the girls to go to. Thus, the data of all the blades ever existed in Alrest including Malos, part from those purged by Amalthus, is stored in that core crystal Rex carry. That's why Malos voice could be heard during the Aion go boom part. It wasn't his ghost, but rather, as he died, the only place for his data to go to was pneuma. If you pay close attention, you might see the screen on Aion display two aegis cores at its center when Pneuma entered. All in all, you might like or dislike the decision of Monolith to end the game with a happy ending, but from a story writer pov, it's far from being shoe-horned and forced. Pyra and Mythra being permanently dead doesn't make sense and would create inconsistency within the game world.

The sad thing about Malos is that when he's telling he pitied Jin for being cursed. He is also crying for help because that is also the same thing happened to him. But he couldn't be sad. Because of the overwhelming despair. Impulse from when Amalthus instantiated him.

I don't think the ending would've been better if Pyra and Mythra had died. In fact, you'd have to change a lot to make it make sense story wise. The Pneuma core was intact and needed to be intact in order for Rex to receive and live without it in the first place, so it makes sense that they'd be able to come back even if they weren't a Trinity Proccesor Core, lol. Even if Klaus didn't seemingly gift Pyra and Mythra the ability to be apart, the crystal would still be intact, and they'd come back probs like they were before. Finally, there are plenty of Spoiler reasons, too, that I'll mention in the replies with a warning and a "see more."

Spoiler time now for the rest of the series as of right now, so.... yeah, please don't read until after you play all of 3 and FR: The whole of 3 wouldn't be a thing without them living, lol. The fact that Ouroboros is a product of Pneuma and then Pneuma and Logos together once it's perfected at the end of FR is enough, but also, I'm sure the Pneuma core was important for the Agnian side of Origin's construction since Keves' side had Ontos so makes sense that the other would need something of equal power to study and use. There's also the added fact that we now know not even Malos died, which makes sense since his core was way more damaged after Torna than at the end of 2, and it's not even that the Logos Core survived but Malos himself is N's sword as stated in the newest art book, so it makes sense that Pyra and Mythra lived even less, lol
