I've never had a healthy relationship with Math in my life, but Eddie makes me feel more comfortable and capable, I can follow the concepts. I casually watch his classes for they make me curious about math, and that's kinda funny when I'm currently in an Arts major haha. Thank you for becoming a Teacher.

@Eddie Woo sir why do we realise the denominator using the conjugates?

@justme28060

@@SalutLunar but why do we do it( the realisation and rationalisation)?
@SalutLunar
3 жыл бұрын
@@justme28060 We don't tend to like having irrational numbers nor imaginary/complex numbers in the denominators of fractions. The best way of getting rid of such numbers is to multiply the numerator and the denominator by the conjugate of the denominator. When we multiply conjugates, its result is in the form of a^2-b^2 (aka. difference of squares). So when rationalising surds, the surd in the denominator comes out in the wash; likewise with realising complex numbers. Eddie Woo has entire playlists on these subjects that are definitely worth a watch.

i don't know how you mutated (2+i)(4+i+4i) into (2+i)(4+i square+4i). Can you explain this?
@marienbad2
3 жыл бұрын
He had (2+i) (2+i)^2, then he squared the second part and re-ordered it: (2+i) (2+i) = 4 + 4i + i^2 then just moved it around and because i^2 is -1 he subtracted it 4 + 4i + i^2 = 4 + i^2 + 4i = 3 + 4i which he than multiplies with the first: (2+i)(3+4i)

what logic have i got wrong here.?? I know it's wrong but not sure why... i^2 = root(-1) * root(-1) = root(-1 x -1) = root(1) = 1. but i know the answer should be -1??? HELP MY HURTING BRAIN PLEASE!!
@NTENewTechnologicalEducation

@Lee Smith I believe, from what I've been told that the identity root (a × b) = root (a) × root (b) , which is what you have applied here. Is only applicable or valid for a and b greater than or equal to zero. So we simply evaluate i^2 as [root (-1)]^2. The square cancels out the square root to give us a final result of -1. I hope this helps
@rubiks6
3 жыл бұрын
At you step *root(-1 x -1)* remember a root has two answers - a negative and a positive. If you _choose the negative_ then you get *root(-1 x -1) = -1* which is what you were looking for. The mistake in your logic was not remembering that square roots have 2 solutions. *±√* (remember that plus/minus symbol?) Your welcome.
