A tour of some of the capacitors of my youth: the Mullard C280 or Tropical Fish capacitors, the Hunts, Dubilier, Wima and Sprague types, and some Mullard Mustard capacitors. Also for comparison a modern 100nF ceramic, and a 1000pF mica capacitor. Note how much higher the voltage ratings of these components are than we'd expect nowadays: 160V is common, and some are 600V. Remember that these parts were designed for valve (vacuum tube) circuits, and were rated accordingly for the much higher voltages used there. Also, printed-circuit board (PCB) mounting was a new thing, and many of these older components were originally intended for tagboard or tagstrip mounting and hence had the leads on the ends (axail).
