Fun fact, one of the guitarists Paul mentioned in an interview that Blake usually takes the lead when writing the transitions between different sections in their songs. He’ll usuallly come up with a drum part and the rest of the band will then go off and write the rest of the transition over the drums.
@tim.noonan
Жыл бұрын
That explains SO FUCKING MUCH about their music to me. I always thought the guitar parts in their transitions were kinda nonsensical, but Blake would always have something really cool going on underneath. The fact that Blake’s parts come first makes all the sense.

There's a lot to talk about with his drumming, but one thing that I want to point out is that his blastbeat snare hits were accented, which is not a common thing to do. Rather than just focusing on hitting the snare at a constant velocity, he was pulling his forearm back and forth to accent the beat and I think that's a great technique that more extreme metal drummers should utilize. Along the same lines, I was watching Ihsahn (Of Emperor) talk about playing black metal chords and he said that he did the same thing - that even if you are tremolo picking, try to attack and accent the beat to make the song feel like it has more movement.

not surprisingly, btbam have had no lineup changes since 2005. metal bands typically have constant changes but the lack of that in btbam is likely a huge factor in how good they are at their unique style of music.

Okay, so it's only fair that I watch this video, too, since I comment-bombed it. XD Very cool drumming! Really interesting, unique sound! Kind of like an evolution from the recent rise of electro-swing back toward traditional swing, only updated to include modern drumming techniques like double-kicks and jazz figure hits, along with modern instruments like electric guitars. Not overly my thing; pretty compositionally simplistic for my taste, but it's fun to give a listen to. Great bass drum sounds, also! Very metal setup! Whoa... okay, blast beats in a swing/jazz song... going toward prog metal a little... now back toward electro-swing. Okay... and now to chugging, djenty prog... and now a bit of slow death metal? Yeah, okay, I take back what I said about compositional simplicity. XD I like that they kept the brass section during the death metal sections! Maybe a little influence from brass metal cover band Brass Against? Or vice-versa? Ooh, I like that synth string and gong section, very symphonic metal sounding! He's a pretty good drummer. Good with a lot of styles, not overplaying the song or overshadowing the band. Nothing particularly flashy or technical, but that's okay!

Since this is your drum week, I think it would be a great idea to watch Drumeo's video with Larnell Lewis from Snarky Puppy listen to a song, and then compose drum parts for it. It's very informative, entertaining, gives insight into his thought process, and shows off not only his technical abilities, but also his constraint in how to serve a song well. Since you enjoyed Gavin Harrison from a previous video, I think you will really enjoy Larnell's playing too.

I'm on the fence about this one. On the one hand, it's cool to hear such a metal drum sound playing swing jazz, and there are some really cool instances where it sounds like a cool fusion of the two very different worlds, especially when he brings in the double kicks during the swing section; on the other hand, as a guy who actually loves jazz too, I found most of the playing really heavy-handed. Jazz often demands a light touch and strong control over loud/soft dynamics, and this was mostly just loud. I think you can hear how more at home he is once the "metal" section(s) kicks in near the end. FWIW, I don't want to suggest that metal drummers can't play jazz well. In fact, Simon Phillips from Hiromi's trio was originally a rock guy who made that transition really well. I also think most metal drummers definitely have the chops, it's just lacking in the nuances of the genres. TBH, I expect you'd hear something similar if jazz guys started playing metal. All that said, I do think the versatility on display here is impressive. It's probably a general truth that if you work at being versatile you're probably going to end up a "Jack of all styles" to paraphrase the term. Maybe there are better "metal" drummers out there, and there are certainly better jazz drummers; but how many can play both as well?
