The super fast blast beat around 05:42 is a gravity blast - it’s done by using the rim of the snare as a kind of pivot point for your stick so you can hit the snare drum going both up and down with your hand/arm.

Whoaa, First Fragment is definitely a nice choice for a tech death theme :D I suggested a different song by them, "Le Serment de Tsion", which you might also want to listen to. Doesn't have a fun flamenco-style intro like this one, but it's also fantastic (and the first track on its respective album too)

Now you gotta hear the song In'El from this album. It's nearly 19 minutes of the most insane and unapologetic musical showmanship you'll ever hear. And it has probably the fastest snare roll I've heard in this type of music. It's beautiful.

This was my "review" when it was presented at our Critical Reactions "Album club" @Discord: "I'm amazed and partly enthralled by the playful inventiveness and instrumental performances but still struggling to keep focus through the songs as an album. Sincerely, it's hard enough to keep focus through one whole song. Still, I love what I hear whenever I gain back focus.... Albumwise it's a weak 7/10 although most songs give a listening experience at level 8 or higher whenever I'm in focus...." Still amazed whenever I listen and do enjoy everything I manage to keep focus on....

Even just from this snippet of the album I can see you point of view. It's technically impressive in every moment but that also means there's always a lot going on at any one time. I could see a full album becoming overwhelming to the point that it makes it difficult to focus on any one thing. I'll have to give it a try one of these days. I didn't have a focus issue with Archspire but musically I'll say they're a bit more restrained. They tend to keep the focus going whereas First Fragment likes to use a ton of counterpoint and embellishing lines.

I knew this day would come 🤔Forest is definitely one of the best fretless bass players in all of metal 👌Also that is not just blurring fast double bass BTW ☝️The drummer is also doing a wicked fast one handed Gravity Blast technique 👌 Basically double times a traditional blast beat ratio.... You ARE CORRECT It is NOT being done by a two handed drum roll ☝️The technique can be hard to explain without a visual 🤔The stick is balanced on the rim of the snare with a teetering attack 🤔Then basically becomes a woodpecker... Eh 🤷🏻♂️Others will be much more adaptive to explain this technique 🙄Easy to look up 👌 GRAVITY BLAST is the dubbed technical term 👌BTW☝️☝️That is the same bass player from the Beyond Creation video reaction you did 👌That video as well features a gravity blast moment that the camera zooms in on to capture that moment of technique...

the way you kept talking about hiding vocals was....interesting. death growls are one of the defining aspects of death metal. perhaps THE most unique thing about it. the idea that anyone in this style of music is ever trying to hide it.........
@CriticalReactions

It's more about contrast than something noticeable in isolation. Listen to the placement of vocals in radio rock, pop rock, pop, or hip hop music and you'll find they're often the most prominent part of a song. Death metal vocals are balanced more heavily into the general music mix rather than above it. If you listen primarily to metal than this probably doesn't sound unusual but coming from a mainstream perspective they sound hidden.

This was rad. Insanely technical, but there's enough groove and catchy elements to keep me interested. I'm not sure how coherent the whole thing is, but it's a fascinating listen from start to listen. Clearly the case of a band overflowing with talent and ideas, and like all such bands, assuming they're relatively new, it bodes well for their future when they're able to craft these ideas and mold their talent into more cohesive works.... and even if they stuck with this style it would be viable and you can just chalk it up to postmodern weirdness with its focus on juxtaposing radically different and disparate ideas and being more interested in the aesthetic of that juxtaposition than in finding any underlying unifying element(s). It's good stuff either way. It's funny what you say about numerical ratings being more cynical. I've always done numerical ratings if only out of habit. I grew up reading the TV Guide giving movie "ratings" and offering critical snippets, so the notion of numerically rating art is deeply embedded in my critical mind... but I ultimately think all numerical ratings are really just trying to gauge my ultimate level of "like" in response to the thing, even if that liking is a combination of elements (how it moves me emotionally, interests me intellectually, etc.) that are hard to balance. It also helps me keep in mind the works I consider ultimate masterpieces that I want to return to and make lists about and stuff.

@@CriticalReactions i dont. there are schools of writing where folks write while being strictly adherent to a very specific set of rules. archspire does that, to itself mostly but they have a formula of thinking going on. its fine, sometimes you want that. it is a little bit masturbatory in spirit, but thats a feel some write to. an impressive wank. i just have more respect to general disregard to conventions. "lets a have a spanish bit, because why the hell not?" and then they do, while remaining true to their spirit of writing. i find myself more entertained with turns the music takes, even most of them are left. that to me is F R E S H
@caixiuying8901
2 жыл бұрын
@@somberlight that's funny because I prefer First Fragment over Archspire BECAUSE I believe FF's use of classical/baroque counterpoint and other elements is its own form of adhering to systems, while Archspire is a lot closer to "pop" music in the sense that the I believe the context is entirely different. Archspire's music would be great to hear at a live show, a lot of the tension and release is perfect with a crowd of people and in that way it's more pop-like. First Fragment is the kind of music I would sit in my room alone to and soak in all of the compositional and textural elements. No hate to Archspire, I like the band and think Dean is a chill ass dude, but subjectively I find a TON more emotion and creativity in First Fragment. Archspire is fast, First Fragment is class. In my own subjective opinion, Archspire takes the aesthetic of classical without really diving into it, which is fine because maybe that's not the point they're trying to convey. First Fragment on the other hand is using conventional writing in a very particular way. Ophidian I has all the speed and guitar solos of First Fragment and also sort of uses the classical aesthetic, but they feel metal first. Vitrified Entity almost feels like the inverse, where classical is first but it's using the metal aesthetic to convey classical ideas. I feel like First Fragment is perfectly in the middle of this. I'd go as far as saying Archspire sounds grounded in reality (despite the lyrics) but First Fragment is almost supernatural in a way that feels like the writing has a higher purpose, like it's trying to push some emotion or experience to it's absolute limit. Just my subjective experience of course haha.
@caixiuying8901
2 жыл бұрын
Critical Reaction's section explaining that First Fragment has a lot of melodic ideas that don't necessarily repeat in the 4 bar chord progression way, like it's more of a journey where the story progresses from beginning to end. Archspire repeats parts in a way that makes the word "song" appropriate where First Fragment is almost more of a "piece". Ofc it's still a song but if you remove the vocals from First Fragment, the instrumentals stand on its own about 90/95% of the way (the vocals still polish FF's music imo, it's still an important element and it'd feel ever so slightly incomplete without the vocals). Archspire without vocals isn't an experience I want to have, it'd be missing like 30/35% of it's energy without the vocals and the music would stop working in my opinion.
@tromboneman4517

@@CriticalReactions, I feel like First Fragment is a crap load more technical. Lots of people have covered Archspire. Meanwhile, there are few full song covers of First Fragment’s first Album, and literally no full length covers of any songs off of Gloire Eternelle. And it’s been almost a year since they released the album. By this point, people would have figured the whole album out yet it seems like we’ll need to wait a few more years to hear covers of this.
