"Veils of Blue" on that album is so good. My favorite Ihsahn's album, very unique.

Don't start looking into how norwegian metal musicians are connected, it's a rabbit hole from which you will never leave. It's actually more convuluted than that Always sunny meme with the conspiracy theory board. Just as one example, the drummer from Mayhem also plays in Arcturus, which includes musicians from Dimmu Borgir (whose former bassist went to former the band Kovenant, where Mayhem's drummer also played) and Ulver, who also had Samoth from Emperor there at some point, who also played in Satyricon and Gorgoroth a band whose drummer played in Borknagar who also had musicians from Ulver and Dimmu Borgir and the guy from Enslaved, who did some stuff with the guys from Immortal, who... Anyway, Peccatum always sounded to me as the lesser of all of Ihsahn's projects. in it's earlier albums, it sounded very much like a less interesting Arcturus, with Ihriel's vocals really not fitting in in any way for me. This album was a bit better, but it sounds more like an essay and a vehicle for experimenting with soundscapes than an album in and of itself.

@thegrimner Don't forget about side-projects or being guests in other band's albums, Fenriz alone between 93 and 95 participated in several recordings of several bands / projects: Darkthrone, Isengard, Dodheimsgard, Storm, Valhall, Neptune Towers.

@@annodomini1991 was trying to not overwhelm too much, because all of those have branches of their own, which in turn have branches of their own. It can be a very overwhelming rabbit hole.

In fact Pål Solberg, brother of Einar and Heidi (Ihrel) was a singer in Peccatum. Could it be him doing the amazing vocals. It's a musical family affair up there in Notodden, Norway!

Love Ihsahn but I had no idea this existed. His presence alone would make this a must-listen for me. Overall I did enjoy this with the lone caveat that it seems like the haunting, ethereal part doesn't seem to have any connection with the metal part, but the ideas are still individually compelling and has me really intrigued to see how they mix these (and other?) genres elsewhere.

This is one of those albums that I always forget about, but when I remember, I put on the CD and I am so pleasantly surprised. I fall in love with the sound all over again, ... and then the cycle continues. I got to say too that in this particular song, that tremolo picked riff is one of the most pleasurable riffs to play. It's very enjoyable.

I think with the exception of his solo album Das Seelenbrechen (which is in my top 3 albums of all time), Peccatum is Ihsahn's most avant-garde and challenging work. I picked this particular song as an introduction because it's one of the much more straightforward ones, and that sparse section is indeed very pretty even while being quite eerie. This album in general is a bit more refined and focused, though still full of experimentation, but the preceding album Amor Fati especially feels unfiltered and just full of brazen ideas (and I love it). The two different styles in this song are certainly conflicting and the transitions can be abrupt, but it totally works for me, and I do feel like it's very much intentional - the song feels like it's about exploring the dichotomy between the two. Ihriel and Ihsahn retired Peccatum after this album, but they do still collaborate on each other's solo work. And yeah, it's quite a musical family. Leprous was Ihsahn's live band for a while, and you can almost think of him as their mentor, and he still has their previous drummer Tobias Ørnes Andersen play the drums on his solo albums. Ihriel actually has four brothers, and all are involved in music. Einar is of course the most well known one, but there's also Kenneth who used to play guitar in Leprous, and Pål who was actually a member of Peccatum as well for the first two albums and has his own black metal band called Source of Tide. And her fourth brother Kaia does production. As a side note, you started pronouncing Ihsahn's name wrong for some reason =P (you used to pronounce it correctly on the previous reactions) It's a 'sh' sound in the middle, not an 's', so it's more like "Ih" - "shan".

Thanks for all the info. Knowing that this is part of Ihsahn's more experimental works makes a lot of sense given my hurdles with it. And I promise to get the pronunciation correct next time :)

Einar sings backing vocals for Emperor for a long time now. Leprous members have been playing live for Ihsahn's solo project for a long time also. Ihsahn has had his fingers in lots of Leprous' work. Peccatum is an interesting project for sure. My fave from them is The song which no name carry. Perhaps for your next vid, have a go at Ihsahn - Grief+The Grave.

He stopped playing keyboard and doing background vocals with Emperor in 2017. Since then It's been done by Jørgen Munkeby, known for bands like Shining (The Norwegian one.)

@@olavrell Didn't know that. And I didn't quite like what Einar sounded like live with Emperor. He did excellent on Leprous' Tall Poppy Syndrome and Bilateral. Other than that, not much of a fan. Jørgen is a crazy dude. I love his work on Ihsahn's albums and Shining as well, especially Blackjazz. Funny how listening to that album brought me to Zu, a wicked good Italian band. Watching them live was a true delight.

I really like The Banks of this River is Night from this album, it's mostly just piano and Heidi (Ihriel), so might be better for a listen than a reaction, also In the Bodiless Heart also from this album is really good. I also like the decision to do a fade out with everything but the guitar, also if you're listening to an album it doesn't really matter that it's not ending bc you still got 5 tracks to go imo. Lastly it's interesting I didn't find the duality very jarring exactly; I found it fitting in a very strange way, and I really liked that late transition back to the quit part. It's almost like the Heidi part is a sort of home for the song and the Ihsahn parts are a sort of extreme development to it but then it goes back home if that makes any sense. I guess I don't feel like they were trying to or needed to combine them. Also that is the whole lyrics, the first three lines are Heidi and the others are Vegard (Ihsahn).

yeah, Leprous was at the start basically Ihsahn's live band. It's crazy. But this album is definitely one of my favourites, you should check out. Veils of Blue will shock you. :)

Sounded like Einar Solberg in that middle part. I know Ihsahn can do cleans but that good?

"Lost in Riverie" for me is their best album, too bad they disbanded in 2005 after releasing an ep and Ihsahn went to form is solo band.

Peccatum is certainly divisive! Now, in hindsight it's pretty easy to see that Ihsahn got a lot of experimentation done in this group that would pay off even more down the line with his solo albums.
