They tightened up completely during that climax when the huge keys come in. I'm sure the extreme looseness of time is entirely intentional, with the tightening up of the time coinciding with the apex of the emotional catharsis. The loose time, to me, is meant to be disorienting. (Also, there's no bass in this band.)

It may also be intended to cause anxiety in the listener through extra-harmonic means, not just by communicating it through words. Like a musical equivalent of "show, don't tell".

Yeees, Funeral Doom is going to be the next Black Metal that we can use to break Brians mind! 😈🤣 I haven't heard this song before but I liked it a lot. Yes the timing was very, VERY off but it did not fall apart in my ears as it still felt like everything was working together (somehow) and the whole thing gave me a sense of uneasyness and restlessness. Job well done. 👍

Wow, this one was a bit too slow, even for me. Chances are while talking about how low the vocals were you were recalling Droste’s vocals from Ahab, because the vocals in the departure were very different and almost tonally throat-singy in their nature, although you did touch on that too. Regardless, vocals like these never cease to impress me, because they’re in that realm where I have a hard time even picturing the human making the sound. The lyrics seem to me to be about the cruelty that is the flow of time, bringing both the growth of a child into an adult, bringing meaning and words, but also old age and death, the cruelty.

There are actually 2 versions of this track. The original of their 1997 EP "ethere", which you listened to, and the other is of their 1998 album "Lead And Aether". They are somewhat different and the album version was clearly re-recorded since the EP version is 12:00 and the album version is 10:34 in length (it's obviously still slow). I can't remember if the album version is a bit tighter or not, it very well might be, but I do believe this looseness adds a lot to the atmosphere. They actually have done this a couple of times where they created an ep with a track and then recorded a slightly different version (with a slightly different name in a couple cases) on the album the next year. I personally really like this track a lot, but I completely understand where you are coming from. I know for a while that funeral doom (and doom in general) is not for everyone. I have put this band on for my friends in the past and none of them were fans, but none of them listened to metal either so it might have been jumping in the deep end for them. I personally love the atmosphere this band brings when you are in a dark forest or when it's dark out in general, it actually relaxes me weirdly enough.

So I just listened to the shorter version again, from Lead and Aether kzitem.info/news/bejne/12aQl2GZcXqaqqg , and it seems a bit faster to me. Other main differences are no bells (which is a dealbreaker LOL) and the short piano interlude in the first half is on guitar instead. There's a pipe organ too, which I don't remember in the longer version. The "looseness" isn't as apparent in the shorter version either. To me, the longer, EP version is clearly superior.

@@solinarisolinari6856 I should go back to the album version again, I was planning on doing that later today, but I remember prefering the EP version as well.

Sometimes the point is to not 'keep time' because not everything in the world or human experience does. They are pros, and I can assure those who think they couldn't keep time here that the piece is just as they intended it to be. Whether it resonates with the listener or not is another matter. It isn't supposed to be disco or foot-tapping music, to say the least.

I don’t know that I would have noticed the ambivalence towards time had you not pointed it out, but I kind of appreciate it. Doom lends itself well to weariness and weight, as you’ve pointed out a number of times before. Since we’re in funeral doom, picture a funeral procession, except all of the people involved were up all night grieving and are exhausted, burnt out, and probably hung over. They’re trying to keep in step, but they’re running on a collective 3 hours of sleep and a couple of them are still slightly drunk. I’m not sure if this is a normal thing for Skepticism or not; I probably ought to do a focused listen to them, see if I notice that elsewhere now that I’m keyed into it.

The very thing I love about this is how it does not allow you to fall into a beat. It makes me read it less as music and more as natural sound. It carries the desolation.

Never been able to get into this kind of super-slow doom. I get the appeal because of how weighty and moody it is, but after a while it just becomes too monotonous and even annoying when the band can't keep the time.

Who are you that suggesting funeral doom to him? Man go and suggest Old Thunder or The Hunt from AHAB. The part that he screams "Whale Ahead" on the hunt is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
