Once again, beautifully explained. I never used to think about chords when composing, and unsurprisingly my counterpoint was terrible and I couldn't figure out why. Ironically, decades ago I used to compose a lot of music on guitar using nothing but chords as a start. For some reason, when I switched to keyboard I forgot about chords. So this lesson has been a useful reminder.

I certainly enjoyed this lesson and will go over it a bit more. It was learning about fugues where all of the music theory finally clicked with me. Prior to that, I relied on E Locrian (added 5th) and an A Blues minor scale, so Baroque is a style/era that I favor.

Very nicely done, Gareth. This idea of Baroque style is obviously one revised for equal temperament tuning, and I often say that the reason J.S. Bach has become so popular - much more so than in his own day - is that his harmony and melodic lines work so well in equal temperament. It makes other Baroque composers sound rather monotonous.
@MusicMattersGB

@jimivy6019

Bach used well tempering, not equal tempering. Anything sounds fine in equal temperament as long as you have already ruined your ear!
@christopherlord3441
10 ай бұрын
Yes of course although exactly which temperament he used is open to debate. That is not what I am saying. I am saying that J.S. Bach's harmony works particularly well in equal temperament tuning which in my opinion is the main reason for his god-like status today. At the time, Telemann had a much higher reputation, and if you listen to Telemann played in equal temperament it sounds monotonous. Probably it sounded fine in mean-tone.

I've been playing for less than a year and a half. When I first started watching your videos I wondered what language you were speaking. But you are such a good teacher that even I could understand, and I've made progress. This was slightly beyond my skill levels, and I will be working on other techniques and come back to this. I'm trying to learn more about cadences and PSR. I haven't yet played any fugues, nor have I examined counterpoint. Maybe it's slightly advancd, but one has to start somewhere, n'est-ce pas?

@@MusicMattersGB Funny thing that I'm watching this again, and I've started tentatively with counterpoint. I've realized two, and it's harder than I thought. One modification I've done is to change my five finger warmup routine and playing in thirds and sixths, and trying to listen to both notes. Since I suspect that I have Aural Aphantasia, this isn't an easy task. So it's going to take time. So be it. I wonder how many times I'll come back to this?
