Wow! So much effort put in, price of education is sometimes high. Definitely having the top of the drum exposed would put your whole system at a major disadvantage. Looking forward to seeing your updates for this project. Best wishes, and have a great 2022!

I have no idea what you are trying to achieve . You need a better intro. Why are you trying to gather heat? That's a massive amount of work to achieve what?

The idea you did get .. what I was trying to achieve (gather heat from compost) .. that was the correct idea. To answer your question .. As for why : #1> I'm a curious tinkerer .. tinkering is what I do. Someone else spent 30+ hours of their time in 2021 watching football games .. or watching sit coms .. etc .. Instead I spent some of my time tinkering with compost system designs. Most of the time is me tinkering with compost heater system designs .. not with the processes of using them to test how they perform .. kind of like the time it takes to design/build/test a new wood boiler , or design/build/test a new pellet stove, etc. #2> There are many examples of people around the world who after having dialed in a compost heater (after built) to be hands free supply of heat for as many as 18 months .. That potential for months of hands free heat appeals to me. The biggest 'con' with getting heat from compost .. is dialing in the details (air/water/Carbon/Nitrogen) to get it 'cooking' at the rate you want it to .. not too fast , not too slow .. that dial in aspect is much easier to do with just burning it. #3> I'm using as the compost fuel .. free to me materials that would otherwise be 'waste' .. the leaves fall from the tree anyway , weather I compost them or not .. the junk mail paper comes weather I compost it or not .. etc. #4> My yard soil is very poor and sandy .. Instead of spending lots of money buying and mixing in a truck load of store bought soil and fertilizers .. I like the idea of just making my own.
