Comrades 2019 Up run Ultra Marathon
Videos are taken from my first experience during the full race of Comrades 2019. It was my first experience for this exceptional challenge, and I'm sure that I'll go back next year to conquer the Comrades 2020 down run and earn my back to back medal.
The Course was different than anything I've ever experienced. Hills of Inchanga, Polly Short, and Bothas killed my feet. but the vibes of the crowd kept me going till the finish.
I Finished my Comrades 2019 up run in 10 hours 45 minute and earned a bronze medal.
That was not my target, I wished to finish the course in less than 10 hours but for a reason, my legs and feet cramped and forced me to walk for an hour.
Meeting the medical station I was able to apply gels and spray my legs to take the pain away but for the feet, it never healed. I know for sure that if I take my shoes off I will not be able to put them on again.
Some tips for your next Comrades run:
- Have enough sleep
- Take a cap with you
- No food available on the first 20km tables
- Walk while you can and embrace speed walking
- Don't rush the beginning it's always busy so have a couple of walks to keep up with the crowd without affecting your knees
The starting line vibes and preparation was awesome you can find the video at • Comrades 2019 start li...
I was in the D seeding, after the gun, it takes us around 4 minutes to reach the start line, vibes are crazy and everyone would you are hyped and ready for the run. However, we all can't run because the street is full of Comrades runner and no space for jogging. That's why I decided that I'll only run if there is space and for the rest of the first 10KM I practiced speed walking.
During the Comrades 2019 race, I've seen so much love and help from all the other runners and the supporting crowd.
The hills killed my legs and knees but I kept going.
At some parts, I thought about dropping the race because the road is never ending and the pain doesn't go away.
The Comrades Ultra marathon race is all a mental challenge. If you have your mind set for completing the race you will do it. if you have any doubt s in your mind, it will affect your body and performance and will make it harder for you.
Preparing for the race I watched a lot of Coach Parry videos on KZitem and followed some of his instructions.
Arthurs seat was a milestone for me because when I reached it I knew that I could finish this race. my legs were good, the weather was awesome and I knew that I've completed already half of the race.
Polly Shorts is a killer yes, but with a mindset of I've only 10 Km to go and I've time to reach the finish line even if I walked the whole 10 KM that gave me the mental push to walk for the 2km of Polly shorts and then run the 8 km to the end of the Comrades race.
