Quirino Granstand, Manila
18 January 2015
President Benigno S. Aquino III joined millions of Filipinos in a eucharistic celebration presided by His Holiness Pope Francis at the Quirino Grandstand. The pontiff is on a State Visit and Apostolic Journey to the Philippines from 15-19 January 2015.
The President greeted Pope Francis upon his arrival then joined the huge crowd in a two-hour holy mass that coincided with the Fiesta of the Santo Niño. The Chief Executive was dressed in a black jacket with matching pants and wore a cap due to the heavy rains that poured throughout the day.
In his homily, Pope Francis mentioned the important role of the Philippines in evangelizing the Asian region. “The Apostle tells us that because God chose us, we have been richly blessed! God ‘has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in heaven.’ These words have a special resonance in the Philippines, for it is the foremost Catholic country in Asia; this is itself a special gift of God, a blessing. But it is also a vocation. Filipinos are called to be outstanding missionaries of the faith in Asia,” the pontiff said.
