Great video. I love the product. I know this video is a bit dated, but you suggested using zinc coated screws but put regular welded wire mesh? Also, instead of using durock(which is really porous) I use hardie backer board(more dense and ridged). The boards can be siliconed/construction adhesives down instead of screwed. Like some else mentioned, it will make easier to uninstall in the future if replacing counter tops. Hope this held someone out

I wish you wouldn't suggest that people use screws to secure the backer board to their cabinets. Regardless of material durability, countertops are a temporary thing, and using screws makes them permanent because it will severely damage the cabinets if removed. Nails would be just as functional but would allow easy removal of the countertops if needed. Love your products, just disagree 100% with this portion of your instruction....

Matt Peterson Yes, I’d use rebar, anyway. Use tabletop fasteners from underside to attach countertop...to screw through the corner blocking from underside.

how would screws make it permanent and nails not? cement board crumbles. you could just as easily take out screws and nails. do you advocate not screwing countertop corbels? How about not screwing cabinets together? Cabinets are just as "temporary" as countertops. Maybe you use double sided tape to hold everything together in your home?

@@jeffreylonigro1382 rebar in a 1.5in thick counter will cause more harm than good. There is not enough thickness to prevent the bar from introducing cracks. You should only use bar for counters 2in and above.

A few weeks ago I decided to install concrete counter tops in my outdoor kitchen. Since I've never messed with concrete counter tops and reading quite a bit of information (several companies) online I decided to purchase your half bullnose package in addition I ordered the sink form kit. After a completing the cabinets, this morning I took everything out of the box and layed the form materials out to get a game plan..... seemed pretty simple. Wow....everything went in fast !!! Now, I already had my tools out from building the cabinets but I installed all the forms (L- shaped top counter top w/ cut outs around columns, 36 lf. front & back side bullnose & 26 lf. bottom u shaped counter with cut outs for side burners, grill & sink) in about 4 hrs. The sink form is a snap!! As a first timer I learned....... fasten one end of the form and looked down the form to insure straightness as I fastened it down. The other thing I learned when cutting the material on my compound miter saw was to use a sharp 80 tooth blade and move the material away from the blade before raising the blade...I chipped a couple corners. NICE PRODUCT, easy to use and I would recommend it! Tomorrow the concrete goes in........

why not use Sika Self Leveling cement? That stuff flows and levels itself.
@ZCounterform1
2 жыл бұрын
If you have full knowledge of the product and its characteristics there may be a self leveler that would work but typically self leveling mixes are used as overlays and can only be poured around 1/2" thick. Also, although they will level, they will not be nearly as smooth as one would typical require for a countertop. We do sell a white countertop mix that has self leveling properties but we call it "near self-leveling" because you really need to trowel it to get a very smooth finish for a countertop.

@storeinformation1494

We recommend using 1/2 inch cement board by itself. Adding this on top of plywood makes your width to high and the 5/8 drop in the forms will not cover it.

what kind of concrete are you using here? The best I can find in the Tampa area is 5000 plus. I can't find any that are made specifically for countertops.
@DanielHerd
7 жыл бұрын
you can use the 5000 or regular as long as you add the silica and cement mix from Counterform Z which bumps up the PSI. You could also use the crack resistant GFRC mix but top with 5000 if you are worried about glass fibers showing up in the top. I think the Counterform Z liquid or thick readymix additive pack is the way to go.

@DanielHerd

Why not put in ladder wire or welded wire as well? I wouldn't use GFRC for overhang without some rebar near the top either (1/4" down though).

I've seen you use stainless steel sinks in all your videos. Do you recommend using granite composite sinks with this method?
@storeinformation1494

Sometimes we see difficulties with the sink form adhering to granite composite sinks, due to the coating that is on them. In this type of situation you are better off going the old fashioned route and creating your own sink knockout out of dense foam board (aka pink board)

Agreed. This videos is over 10 years old. At the time, we did not produce any of our own mixes or admixes so we were working with the Buddy Rhodes countertop mix at the time and this is how that particular concrete mix was designed to be used. If you watch any of our newer videos you will see our Liquid-Crete admix or our White Countertop Mix which both have a highly flowable consistency. This video is still a great resource on how the forms work but I would not pay too much attention to the mix itself.
