This viewer kindly sent me an amazing document setting out all the information that she wanted to know about loft insulation and vapour barriers. In the video, I explain my opinion as she states several different ways of installing the loft insulation. In my view, when you have a cold loft space like she does all you need to do is make sure that the ceiling is airtight you don't necessarily need to go to the extent of adding an air vapour control layer at the ceiling level. We know that an airtight ceiling is actually quite a good vapour barrier also. Being that the loft space is a cold space and is vented, any moisture that gets through the ceiling into the vented space will be removed by the ventilation, assuming the ventilation is good. In this video, I explain that using insulation with foil on is not necessarily the best thing to do in fact, I'm quite against foil-faced insulation and even PIR insulation because it is not air open. Air open insulation has got to be the best way to go if you have the opportunity to use it. In a loft that has a cold vented space above you definitely have the option to use Rockwall or a fibreglass open installation full.
