This is really great information Dan! I Actually stopped using my leave in conditioner completely. I was using it 1-2 times a month, and after using it, my beard never felt as good as when I used a butter. It was a Beard Octane so I knew it was a good product, I just preferred butter and how it felt the next day. Using the leave in conditioner just didn't make my hair feel as nourished. Also after your video about not conditioning everyday, my beard felt better, and styled better as well!

Great video Dan.. I’ve already kinda got a chance to pick your brain on some of these questions on previous videos. I still have found and am finding every beard is a little different and the most important thing is trying new things . Don’t be afraid to mix it up gentleman.. based on you’re skin type, products and even the environment/season can dictate what’s really necessary for your own beard! Example : I must wash my beard daily if not every other day and that’s with a beard wash. If not product buildup will lead to skin irritation and acne. I even found I just have to go lighter on butters and oils in the hotter, more humid months of the year. There is no one size fits all rotation for every beard!

Well-presented and interesting, although I'm still not sure what to make of it. Fairly long experiments have lead me to stay with co-wash, co-wash, wash; repeat. When Scotch Porter released their Leave-In I couldn't get it to work with my beard, no matter how much guidance they gave me. They said I could co-wash with it in place of their Beard Conditioner, and that worked. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Beard Oils are made to absorb and coat, meeting that "conditioner" standard. For me, how well and to what degree they do each of those things is more important than scent. I will use only beard oil for days on end, but extreme humidity will have me also using beard butter (although I tire of the feel). What am I missing or not understanding about Leave-In Conditioner that makes it a specific product category and function?
@DanCBearded

The difference with leave-in conditioner and beard oil is a great question. On paper they seem like they have the same functions. In practical use they are very different. I'm not sure I have the words to best explain right now (brain is tired lol)

Thanks for the video Dan. I have some questions on this topic. 1) What sings would one look for regarding damage to a beard which has been "over conditioned" by rinse out conditioner? 2) Is there any science behind your statement that conditioning too much can damage your beard and if so what is that science? People like George Bruno advocate for a 6 day co-wash one day regular wash routine and he has a lot of knowledge/experience. Also lots of guys out there in the community co-wash almost daily and don't seem to have any issues, so I'm not sure I understand the real danger or concern on this topic. Thanks!
@DanCBearded
4 жыл бұрын
Hey Chase! I do have a video dedicated to over conditioning hair, be sure to check that one out! It is an older one, but still good info. 1) the main sign of over conditioning your hair is that it gets weighed down and becomes increasingly more difficult to style. That is because you have layers build up on the hair. With that happening your hair is not able to property get the nutrients it is needs (those layers often block/clog the follicle). I have personally experienced this and it was a light bulb type moment when I made the switch. 2) No science I can pull up right now. Busy day with the family, but I will try another time to grab some studies for you. There are tons and tons of articles you can check out about over conditioning hair though. It isn't something I came up with. For the guys you mention that co-wash daily, I have tonsss of comments and messages about those same guys that try mixing up it from my advice, and it is a game changer. They didn't realize what over-conditioning was until they experienced the other side. You can check out many of those comments in the comment section of my over conditioning video. For the George Bruno reference, he has an entirely grey beard. I believe I mention it in this video today, but grey beards often work better with more frequent conditioning. They are missing the cuticle (outer protective layer of the hair) and many conditioners do a good job or artificially mimicking that layer. My videos are just to give a baseline of information. There isn't a beard out there that should follow every single thing I say. Experiment and see what works for your beard. This is just my advice for people to think on.

interesting. my experience has been the total opposite, not that i disagree with you. i've slowly turned away from oils and balms and towards conditioners for my beard. i'm a conditioner junkie now. i cowash and use a leave-in every day and my beard has never felt better. and, horror of horrors, i've grown to love silicones! i'll shampoo once a week. i found that oils and such were doing nothing for my beard but giving it some shine. rough and shiny was my beard. but conditioning daily has made my beard silky soft. i've actually begun learning to make my own conditioners because i was going through them so much that it was getting expensive. i used to be all natural or bust but, ever since researching hair product formulations, that's gone out the window because natural has never given me what i need except a certain earth love satisfaction. so now i make my conditioners with btms 50, kinda natural-ish, with a small fraction of argan and meadowfoam oils and a tiny bit of silicone. i also add protein to combat the effects of over-conditioning. i'm going to experiment with broccoli seed and daikon seed oils, which supposedly can be used as silicone substitutes. i do love butters though, so i'm also going to try to whip up a conditioning butter to to get the best of both worlds of oil and conditioning.

Great breakdown from experience. Thanks for the feedback! What length is your beard (I see the pic of course, but often times those are old)?
@cactaceae123
4 жыл бұрын
@@DanCBearded from that pic, add five months. so, i would say about three to five inches, depending on which part of the beard you pick a hair strand. so, let's say, four on average. like you say to another commenter about your video, my description is only a baseline. i have to be very attuned to the ingredient lists in products and how my beard is behaving. even silicones, i say i love them but i make sure to use the volatile or rinsable ones, or i check to see that there is another ingredient in there like trideceth-12 PVP to disperse the silicone. another thing is that i don't comb or brush my beard, i rake my fingers through and scrunch because i want to develop curls and ringlets, which behave differently with product than when straight. so, by no means, do i disagree with your video. in fact, you're my go-to guy for beard science! oh, and history, yeah, that too. lol.

As someone who uses beard butter every day but has never used conditioner - do you recommend the first conditioner I get be a wash conditioner or a leave in?

I've recently started using beard butter in my every day routine, I heard you say you use it at night. In your opinion is it ok for during the day use? TIA

I use butter regularly as part of my morning routine. I oil, comb, 5min wait, light blow dry ( medium heat and a decent range away from my face) use my buffalo horn comb to style, then I apply beard butter to my mustache and beard. The difference in applying the beard butter in the morning as part of my routine and at night before bed is that in the morning I just apply on the outside instead of working my fingers all the way through to my skin I use it more or less as a shield to sofen and condition throughout the morning and the day. A few times a week I will use beard balm in the morning instead of beard butter if I'm going to be exposed to the elements and wind. Hope this helps. I've developed this routine in conjunction with many of Dan C's teachings. Would not be where I am today without his KZitem channel.

Totally personal preference. There is nothing wrong with butter also during the day

Do I really need in shower conditioner or leave in conditioner if I just use beard butter nightly? I kind of feel like I don’t as I feel it’s kind of overkill. I’ve never used beard conditioners and I feel like I really don’t have to.

Yo Dan quick question. As far as Honest Amish balm is concerned, would you consider it as a butter, balm or a conditioner? Can this be used after oil for a nighttime route? Or would you not recommend it. Thanks!

So theirs would fall under the balm/butter type of conditioning and not the in shower or leave-in type of conditioner

Hey Dan, how much damage can I do to my beard then when I'm washing my hair..ie shampooing it and conditioning it as normal and then washing my face and the soap residue runs through the Beard?
